Bowen calls it quits
Debbie Bowen, who had been employed by the City of McLouth as its utility clerk, officially retired this past Friday and was honored that afternoon during a reception at City Hall. Cake and punch were served to the attendees.
MEET AND GREET No. 2
Jefferson County North USD 339 superintendent candidate Jennifer Gatz was the center of attention during a Meet and Greet event yesterday at the District Office in Winchester. The day before it was Dr. Brad Kempf, who was later interviewed by the Board of Education. Today it is Jeff County North HS Principal Joe Worthington's turn to be the center of attention. The Meet and Greet event for him is scheduled for 3:45 to 4:30 at the District Office and will be followed by an interview to be conducted by the school board.
Volunteers hard at work at Old Jefferson Town
Deb Case and other volunteers were busy Tuesday, Jan. 18 at Old Jefferson Town, where efforts continue to digitize old photographs and other documents using the special software the Jefferson County Historical Society was able to acquire about a year ago through a grant.
Hats off to Deb and her crew of dedicated volunteers!
Party Time in McLouth!!!
Five people associated with McLouth's Church of the Nazarene provided the music for the 12th annual Festival of Trees held this past Saturday at the Fire House and Luse Park. In addition to the lighting ceremony in the park, a highlight of the evening was the giving away of prizes to children and adults alike at the fire station.
Cathy's Big Day
There was a Holiday Open House at Cathy's Style Shop, soon to become known as Salon 1856, on Saturday afternoon in downtown Oskaloosa. Cathy Barnett, the owner of the shop, will be retiring at the end of the year and is selling the business to Monique Moraliz.
Festive Feast in "WinCity"
Residents of Winchester and the surrounding area converged on John Steuart Curry Community Center the evening of Monday, Nov. 22 to enjoy the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. The event was sponsored by the Winchester Community Organization.
Dinner-goers feasted on turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, Jello salad, a roll, a piece of pumpkin pie and a drink.
Many chose to come to the community center to eat with friends and neighbors, but for those unable to get there for some reason, meals were delivered to their homes or apartments.
Oskie High's Cheerleaders are No. 1 in Kansas!!!
The Oskaloosa High School cheerleading team coached by Edna Wells and her assistant Madison Grother took first place Saturday at the Game Day Spirit Showcase in Topeka sanctioned by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. The team was competing on the Class 2A level at Stormont-Vail Events Center.
To celebrate the state title, the girls were treated to a Pizza Party late Monday morning at Gambino's Pizza in Oskaloosa.
Congratulations to the team, its coaches and its crimson and blue fans!
CLEANING UP THE TOWNS
Jefferson County North High School students were working in Winchester and Nortonville today (Nov. 17) in carrying out the school's Community Clean-Up Day. Students of David Chaffee and Rebecca Halling were working in Winchester along Delaware Street when this video was taken.
One Day After Veterans Day
There was an assembly Friday morning at McLouth Elementary School honoring veterans from McLouth and the surrounding area, during which the McLouth High School Jazz Band under the direction of Tristan Bartley performed the National Anthem and the Armed Forces medley.
McLouth Mayor Keith Meador and Chief of Police Brad Williams were among the veterans recognized by MES pupils and their teachers.
This is Jim Ralston, who addressed members and friends of the Jefferson County Historical Society Sunday afternoon at Old Jefferson Town in Olathe. The occasion was the 55th annual meeting of the organization.
This is Joy Thayer, who was interviewed this week by the paper about the sheepdog trials that will be taking place on the west edge of Oskaloosa November 13 and 14. The event will be open to the public - bring your lawn chair, Joy says - and the proceeds from the sale of items at the concession stand will benefit the Jolly Juniors 4-H Club.
