Eight Years and Counting ...
The Editor reports that today marks the end of his 8th year with the paper, and he says the experience on the whole has been well, "interesting." Now speaking of "interesting," the ad seen here promoting the showing of the movie "My Wild Irish Rose" at the Meriden Theater appeared in the Friday, May 18, 1923, issue of The Meriden Message, which came out just four days after the fire at the Hurley farmhouse occurred. In fact, that is the story about "The Great Tragedy," as it was called, just to the left of the ad. Genevieve Hurley, presumed to have perished in the fire, was Irish ... well, half Irish. Her mother was a Metzger, which sounds like a German name, but perhaps it's of a different origin. At any rate, like they say, folks, you can't make this stuff up.

One Year Later
It was a year ago today that the Jefferson County papers published the editor's story about his "discovery" of a song that had been written (the lyrics anyway) by Genevieve Hurley in 1919.
The editor reports that his thinking at the time was that the song wasn't written with anyone particular in mind but that he has since come to believe that when Genevieve penned the words to "When the Roses Bloom in May," she did have a certain someone in mind. The question then becomes obviously, who was that someone?
While the song tells of a "fair maid back in Kansas" who was longing for a soldier overseas to return from war so that the two of them could be married, the editor also reports that he thinks Genevieve may have actually been married at the time the song was published, this being based on a curious story in an Idaho newspaper that would seem to suggest that she might have gotten married in the greater Kansas City area in August of 1917.
The editor is now in possession of the signature of a man who in 1917 had a court-issued license to marry a Jennie Hurley, but was that Jennie Hurley the Genevieve Hurley who wrote the song? Suffice it to say it's too bad that license didn't have Jennie Hurley's signature on it because the editor already has Genevieve Hurley's signature in hand.
At any rate, the editor has heard "When the Roses Bloom in May" played on the piano once but is still hoping to hear a fellow sing it to his "Rosalie" sometime.
