The University of Maine faces ongoing housing challenges as it welcomes a record number of students for the 2024-25 academic year. Amid an ongoing housing crisis on and off campus, students expressed mixed reactions to the University’s temporary housing measures and how Estabrooke Hall’s closure was communicated.

Tim Burton returns to the director chair in the long awaited sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which burst into theaters Sept. 6. With returning cast members and new blood stepping in, the film serves as a modest follow-up to the beloved original that mixes the recognizable mold of the old film with a few new tricks, albeit suffering from some drawbacks.

Every two seconds, a blood transfusion is urgently needed, according to the Red Cross. Over the past 20 years, blood donations have decreased by about 40%, causing the Red Cross to declare a national blood emergency in August. Jennifer Costa, a representative from the Red Cross, suggested the need stems from a lack of high school and college-aged donors.

Half a century later, Stephen King’s “Carrie” remains an essential read for any fan of supernatural horror. First published on April 5, 1974, the novel received favorable reviews from critics for its memorable story, prominent themes and overall disturbing nature.

The iconic story follows 16-year-old Carrie White who has been bullied and belittled by her peers. Not only is she constantly harassed at school, but she also lives with her abusive and highly religious mother, Margaret. Carrie also harbors telekinetic powers that she has slowly developed over time.

While the book is primarily told through a linear third-person narrative, it will often switch over to various perspectives that take place in the story’s future. This form of narration contains manuscripts, newspapers and autobiographies from past survivors. The foreshadowing and buildup to the event and what transpires afterwards is extremely gripping and gives further background detail on relevant characters.

Coming up on its 70th anniversary, the thriller mystery “Rear Window” remains one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most iconic films to date. Known famously as the “Master of Suspense,” Hitchcock layers the film with many of his signature attributes as a director while also portraying cautionary themes of what happens when observing everyday individuals.

The story follows Jeff Jefferies, played by Hitchcock regular Jimmy Stewart, who works as a photojournalist recovering from a photoshoot injury. While stuck in his home in a New York City apartment complex, Jefferies passes time by looking out a rear window. One day, Jefferies notices suspicious activities occurring in the apartment room across from him, which eventually leads him and his close friends to investigate further into a potential murder.

The University of Maine Graduate Worker Union (UMGWU) is hosting a rally on March 26 at 1:30 p.m. to raise awareness of the grievances concerning rent and food expenses and advocate for fair wages, childcare accessibility, parental leave and rights for international workers. All interested members of the public, including students and faculty, are invited to meet at the Martin Luther King Plaza on campus to join the UMGWU movement.

Union members, organizers and those planning to participate in the rally will commence from the MLK plaza and march toward a bargaining session between administration officials and union representatives. The location has yet to be confirmed.

“The real power comes from the actual membership, showing that we’re real people in the real world with real issues that need to be addressed,” explains Eric Brown, a graduate research assistant and UMGWU member involved in bargaining negotiations.

The University of Maine Black Bears Softball and Baseball teams have both kicked off their respective 2024 seasons. In the America East Preseason rankings voted on by the coaches, Maine Softball finished fifth out of six teams, while Maine Baseball was ranked second out of seven teams.

Both teams entered the season following success in the 2023 America East Championships. Softball entered the tournament as the lowest seed yet finished third in the playoffs. Baseball went undefeated in the America East playoffs to win their first  championship in 12 seasons. They advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament before losing to the University of Miami and the University of Louisiana.

Up on the third floor of the University of Maine’s Fogler Library, in their Special Collections, there lies a blue bound book that holds the recorde

There are 12 chapters, some more riveting than others, that bring the reader on a journey through the beginning and growth of UMaine in the late 19th and early 20th century. A crew of devoted university individuals did research for the book, but it was David C. Smith who compiled the research into a narrative-like structure. It is easy to take the work put towards this book for granted. Still, the hard work and effort these individuals put towards this project has allowed UMaine history to live in a concise and cohesive place rather than jumbled around campus.

On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, Orono residents will head to the Town Office on Main Street between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. to cast their votes for the Annual Municipal Election and the State Presidential Primary. Orono’s municipal and primary elections can now be held in conjunction after a charter amendment was approved by town voters in 2022.

Regarding Orono’s Annual Municipal Election,  three town council seats and two RSU 26 School Board seats are up for grabs. As only two candidates seeking the available three-year terms on the school board, the University of Maine’s professors Mark Brewer (political science) and Brian McGill (ecology) are likely to succeed in their bids for re-election.

The town council race consists of four candidates seeking to fill three open seats for three-year terms. The names on this ballot portion will be Jacob Baker, Robert Laraway, Matthew Powers and Scott Thomas.

02/11/2024

As many readers will know, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, more commonly known as PFAS, have been a growing environmental concern in Maine. As defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, these are very long-lasting chemicals that are most commonly found in water, air, fish, and soil that can be linked to harmful health effects in both animals and humans. The extremely decelerating rate at which these chemicals break down is why they have also been named “forever chemicals.”

One small Machias, Maine family business, the Schoppee Farm, has taken the initiative to do what it can to resolve this environmental issue. Eight-generation owner Ben Edwards, who has a background in biochemistry, has been researching how growing h**p can purify soil contaminated with PFAS. While researching this process, the farm grows h**p for the products it sells in organic, high-quality soil on the same property the family has used for centuries.
