Happy Black History Month! This month, we’re shining a spotlight on trailblazing Black women breaking barriers across industries—sharing their stories, wisdom, and unstoppable drive.

As a recent law school applicant, Scott experienced firsthand the financial burden of the application process. The costs became a source of stress, and as she reflected on her struggles, she realized that other Black women likely faced similar barriers. In 2020, in response to the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, she founded the Legally BLK Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to providing financial and application support, mentorship, and professional development for Black women applying to law school.

Scott was recently awarded the David Prize, which celebrates individuals with bold ideas for creating a better, brighter New York City. She received $200,000 in unrestricted funding to further her mission.

Happy Black History Month! This month, we’re shining a spotlight on trailblazing Black women breaking barriers across industries—sharing their stories, wisdom, and unstoppable drive.

Breaking ground in medicine, we celebrate Tamia Potter, MD, the first Black woman to become a Neurosurgery Resident at Vanderbilt University in its 148 year history!

According to the National Institutes of Health, less than 4% of all neurosurgeons in the United States are Black or African American. When accounting for both race and s*x, as of September 3, 2020, 33 neurosurgeons in the United States identified as both Black or African American and female. Dr. Potter’s passion for medicine started early—she worked as a nursing assistant while earning her degree at Florida A&M University, an HBCU that laid the foundation for her groundbreaking career. After completing medical school at Case Western Reserve University, she made history, paving the way for future generations of Black women in neurosurgery.

Her story is one of resilience, representation, and the power of determination. As she continues to make strides in the medical field, she serves as an inspiration for aspiring doctors, proving that no dream is out of reach.

She co-created the movement years ago as a way to ensure historically marginalized users felt validated throughout the product design process.
