The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People advises Black student-athletes to think twice about enrolling in colleges and universities in Florida after Florida’s Senate Bill 226. The bill dismantled diversity, equity and inclusion departments across Florida universities and colleges.

“Colleges seeking to benefit from Black talent must invest in the education of all Black students without question,” Dr. Ashley L. White, an Education Fellow at the NAACP said.

Wiley Hartley now exclusively plays baseball for UCF. Hartley originally signed to Campbell University for football, but had a transformative shift in his athletic career that lead him to play baseball.

“Wiley’s work ethic separated him apart,” Sean O’Sullivan, his high school football coach, said. “He’s the boy you would raise your own son to be.”

4EverKnight encourages Knights to help Knights. The fundraiser aimed to teach students about philanthropy and the importance of the resources offered at UCF. The carnival was also an opportunity for students to better their mental health.

“Students can come to the carnival, be outside, get some fresh air, spend time with their friends and fellow Knights and have some time for some self-care at the carnival,” Jenny Meyer, assistant director of student engagement and philanthropy, said.

UCF student, Seif Asi, is facing legal action after allegedly making antisemitic threats toward a group of students demonstrating in support of Israel on Jan. 23. His lawyer said “legally there is a difference between a comment and a threat. We will see if comments were made that rise to a level of a legal threat.”

Students connected to the incident speak on what they witnessed and how they feel UCF’s response was.

Following the incident, UCF Chief of Police Carl Metzger encouraged students to “come together to condemn hate and violence” after recent hate crime on campus.

The Made@Home Cinema Club hosted their second short film festival, “Homesick,” showcasing 15 student’s short films ranging in genres. Each of these young filmmakers gathered together Friday to share their work and celebrate their art at the Enzian Theatre.

“There’s a really good, consistent quality that I haven’t seen at other film festivals, even if they’re a lot bigger film festival,” junior film major Blake Erickson said.

UCF will begin construction on the $70 million Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion with anticipated opening set for fall 2025. The building will offer a multitude of teaching spaces including labs and virtual reality education.

According to the Florida Hospital Association, Florida will face a nursing shortage of 59,000 nurses by 2035. The new campus will make space for more programs, students and teaching opportunities with donations aimed to address this issue.

UCF won their first Big 12 men’s basketball game against the Kansas Jayhawks on Wednesday night. They fought against a 16-point lead in the first half of the game, but persevered, winning 65-60. At the end of the game, fans rushed to court holding frond leaves to celebrate the win.

Students are sleeping, eating and studying among pests in the Lake Claire and Hercules dorms at UCF. Students who reported the infestation to housing management had pest control sent over to handle the situation, but they said the technicians only sprayed the visible pests, and it was not effective. Two to three weeks later, they said, the pests were back. Zoe Wainscott, a chemistry freshman at UCF, said there are ants everywhere in her Lake Claire apartment: in the kitchen, in the living room, in her bedroom and in her furniture, such as her sofa, her desk and even her own bed. "I've been waking up with bites on my legs, and I notice in the beginning of this week that I have one on my arm too," Wainscott said. "I thought that maybe it was just something like being outside or whatever, in like high grass, but yesterday I did not take a walk just to see if I had any new bites, and this morning I woke up with two new ones." The Indie Galactic Space Jam invaded Orlando Science Center this past weekend, with UCF alumni of varying gaming expertise attending a competition of rapid video game-making. “What I find with game jams and hack-a-thons is that when you're given a new problem, and you have an opportunity to try out new tools and skill sets, this is a great low-stakes opportunity to test yourself,” UCF alumnus Carl Dungca said. With 48 hours on the clock, teams and individuals competed against each other to create and test run a video game that involved aspects of real space science, the Florida space industry and a fun experience. Virtual reality, PC gaming and planetarium dome games were some of the highlights of what was created at this year's IGSJ, which marked the seventh jam in the event's run.
