Construction on Clark Avenue between East of Stillwell and 101 should be wrapped up by years end according to a spokesperson from the County Public Works department. JF Will Construction of Santa Maria is finishing two medians and turn patterns for the new intersection and signalization for access to the shopping center on the west (Grocery Outlet, Service Station and others) and eventually the housing-commercial development on Key Site 1 on the north side. Also, resurfacing on both sides of Clark Avenue east of HW 135 was to be completed by Thanksgiving, however is being delayed into December.

Historian Jim Bray tells the story of Allan Hancock (Hancock College) as the original owner of the La Brea Tar Pits in West LA. He also tells how Orcutt got its name. And: 4.)-Deck your home with lights for this year's FaLaLa awards. Deadline: December 4.

Orcutt Activities this weekend: A Holiday Market with raffles, artisan market and lots of food at Oasis Center and the always popular second Saturday breakfast with eggs, pancakes, sausage, OJ and all the 'fixins' from 7:45 til 10am. Also, If you would like to help with an Orcutt Trails project, due to erosion issues, Santa Maria Valley Trails is doing volunteer maintenance between the dog park and Orcutt Hill Road at the Orcutt Community Park off Rice Ranch Road. Meet a the park at 8:00am.

For 26 years, Laura Branch has taught Science at Righetti high School. Saturday she received the award from Santa Barbara County as teacher of the year at ceremonies at the Music Academy in Montecito. Eight other public school educators are recognized at the 11th Annual Salute to Teachers. Branch went through elementary and high school in Santa Barbara. She attended UCSB, San Diego State then earned her teaching credential and master's degree from UCSB.

A candlelight vigil will be held tonight at 6pm at Elks Field in Santa Maria for Mason Rohwedder who lost his life in a motorcycle accident last week. Mason graduated from Orcutt Academy last spring. He played baseball for the school for four years and was a freshman at Cuesta College., A Go Fund Me page has been set up to assist Mason's family.

"Tis the coming season." Halloween is here, Daylight goes to Standard time Sunday, November 3, Thanksgiving November 28, Santa Maria Christmas "Parade of Lights" Saturday December 7, Orcutt Christmas parade Saturday December 14. In December, the Orcutt Pioneer will have it's 12th annual Fa LaLa awards for folks that warm up their homes for holiday viewing.

An important candidate forum for candidates for the Santa Maria Airport District Board of Directors Area 5 (Orcutt) will be held Monday, October 14. You will be able to hear from candidates David Baskett and Tony Guy. Networking begins at 5:30pm. Forum begins at 6:00pm. Refreshments and interpretation services provided. Some of issues include: 5 million dollar judgement against airport district endangered species violations, neighborhood noise, commercial airline status
