WSSB Public Radio Jazz 90.3 FM

WSSB-FM is a Community service of South Carolina State University. We feature news, sports & jazz music.

WSSB began broadcasting in 1985 when the Federal Communications Commission, (FCC) granted an educational license to South Carolina State University. WSSB-FM Radio is operated by the Office of University Relations & Marketing at South Carolina State University. WSSB-FM Radio broadcast at 90.3 MHz with 80,000 watts of power. The station's signal covers the tri-county area of Orangeburg, Calhoun, and

Bamberg Counties. WSSB-FM, with 80,000 watts, is the most powerful noncommercial college radio station in the state. WSSB 90.3-FM broadcast 24 hours a day/365 days a year utilizing staff, students, and community volunteer operators. WSSB has developed a highly successful music format consisting of primarily smooth jazz with a blend of R&B Oldies, Gospel, Blues, and Hip Hop which has gained the respect and support of the university faculty, staff, students, the Orangeburg community and surrounding communities. WSSB-FM Radio is affiliated with NPR (National Public Radio); AURN (American Urban Radio Network); APM (American Public Media) which supply the station with news, time, sports, current event features, and diverse music programs.

- Did you know that August 20 is National Radio Day? On this day, we recognize the invention of radio and the value it has in our lives and around the world.

Radio, where would the world be without it? In 1906 the first broadcast for the general public came into existence. Soon news and world events were beginning to populate the airwaves. Entertainment and music followed.
Radio provides a worldwide connection and continues to play a vital role today.

On Saturday night on JAZZ SETS (WORLD CLASS JAZZ WITH THE BACK STORY), we will feature Miles Davis, Ledisi and smooth jazz greats. On Monday, I (Luther Battiste) celebrated my 76th Birthday. I am as Sly Stone once said, “Thankful and Thoughtful” and despite life’s challenges I know that I am blessed. Help me celebrate my birthday by listening to some great jazz on Saturday evening. We will also showcase musicians and vocalists from the Smooth Music Genre including Boney James, Charlton Singleton, Four Play, Patti Austin, Candy Duffler, and Paul Brown.

Our SMOOTH MUSIC SET will feature Natlie Cole, Teddy Pendergrass, The Whispers, and Minnie Ripperton. All singers who achieved great success.

Our SMOOTH MUSIC SET will feature The Temptations.

We will feature the group of the 1960’s and 1970’s. The Temptations were from Detroit and recorded with Motown Records. They were known not for their hit music but their amazing choreography. They were the first Motown group to receive a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

We will also have great music from Eumir Deodato, Bob James, David Sanborn, Gregory Porter, Al Jarreau, Cassandra Wilson, and Eric Alexander.

Our SMOOTH MUSIC SET will feature Curtis Mayfield performing live at the noted London jazz club Ronnie Scott’s. Curtis Mayfield was a noted singer, songwriter, guitarist and record producer. We will also have great music from Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers and vocals by Bria Skonberg, Gregory Porter, Eddie Jefferson, Jazzmeia Horn, and Cassandra Wilson.
