Formed in the suburban sprawl of Los Angeles nearly 25 years ago, Post-Hardcore Punk band SPARK OF LIFE, have always thrived on unpredictability. Brainchild of vocalist Steve Jennings and guitarist Nicholas Piscitello, the group initially stood out for their unique balance of melodic intensity and raw emotion, carving a niche in Southern California’s Punk scene.
Their 2003 debut, "Promises Made Promises Kept" produced by Russ Rankin of Good Riddance, captured their distinctive sound and earned regional acclaim. However, the band soon faded into obscurity, stepping away without fanfare or formal dissolution.
Fast-forward to 2018, when a one-off reunion at a secret Rise Against show—organised by Steve at his high school skatepark—rekindled the creative spark between Steve and Nicholas. Sporadic writing sessions followed, and in 2023, they released "Song of Hope," their first EP in two decades. Featuring Fred Armisen on drums, the EP showcased a matured yet nostalgic sound, blending New Wave influences with their Post-Hardcore roots.
Now with a refreshed lineup, including guitarist Steve Sain and bassist Chris Sprat, deeply the boys. released "I Am the Arsonist" in 2024, paving the way for their highly anticipated album, "Plagued by the Human Condition," due in early 2025. Recorded at Cherokee Studios and released via New Age Records, the album explores themes of personal growth and emotional transformation. Tracks like “No One Hates Me More Than Me” and “Note to Self” highlight their evolved sound, proving their ability to thrive as both nostalgic icons and dynamic innovators.
In a recent interview with Steve, I asked him to tell me more about the true meaning behind the new single, he told me:
"Matters of the heart are always risky. 'In Pursuit Of' is about knowing those risks and deciding to chase the love your heart wants anyway...even though it might break in the end"
And that brings me nicely to the featured single - “In Pursuit Of.”
This deeply emotional track that explores the tension between vulnerability and strength. With a compelling blend of melancholic melodies and driving rhythms, it captures the struggle of grappling with past mistakes while yearning for connection. The song’s raw sincerity and dynamic composition create a captivating listening experience, drawing the audience into its poignant narrative. It's a striking portrayal of redemption and determination that leaves a lasting impression.
To close, this single and forthcoming album won’t gather dust in any collection, and will keep heads bouncing and feet tapping from sofa to stage. So why not clear a space, and give SPARK OF LIFE a try for 2025.
