Misinformation, or ‘fake news,’ isn’t new—but as technology advances, distinguishing real from fake has become harder. AI-generated deepfakes—hyper-realistic images and videos—are increasingly difficult to detect. While fourteen states have banned this technology, deepfakes of public figures, including politicians, continue to spread across social media.

Reporter Rosemary Wright () shares the full story on today’s show.

“People can actually get free gas. Imagine that,”- Gov. Ron DeSantis. After the latest hits of the hurricanes Helene and Milton, power is slowly being restored, but almost 200 thousand residents are still without it. About 30 percent of gas stations in Florida do not have fuel. Governor Ron DeSantis has announced 12 sites for free fuel distribution and promises more sites will be open soon. Desantis also says debris cleanup will continue 24 hours a day — seven days a week.

President Biden has also announced 600 million dollars in federal aid; due to the extent of the devastation—with massive flooding, uprooted trees, and homes and businesses destroyed —officials say it could take many months for some areas to recover.

Since 4am this morning, Chapman students belonging to the group known as Students for Justice in Palestine or SJP have camped out and will not leave until their demands are met. Let’s meet a Chapman News alumni!
Meet Langley Turcsanyi

I’ve been working at CBS Studios as a publicity coordinator for a little over a year now, and it’s been amazing! I’ve been part of campaign launches for some really exciting shows, including the revival of Frasier on Paramount+. In PR, I spend lots and lots of time working with journalists, including broadcast. Having an understanding of their job and what they need in order to tell a compelling story in the broadcast format (learned all of that from Chapman News and my broadcast journalism minor) really helps me to pitch to them and prepare talent for their interviews. Aside from working on the PR side of things, I also help out with our team’s social media at CBS Studios. This requires me to be on the press line at red carpet events for premieres, wrap parties, and awards events to interview talent! I learned so much from Chapman News about being a good interviewer, thinking on my feet, and just keeping composure during the chaos

I am so so thankful for the experience and knowledge I gained from Chapman News and my minor!

MEET TEAGAN CALI!

What skills have you learned so far this semester?
I have leaned a multitude of skills that I wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else. Chapmans advanced facilities and hands on learning has allowed me to learn all aspects of news broadcast from producing a hard hitting package to anchoring to even being a technical director or producer.

What motivated you to join the newscast?
When I was a freshman some upperclassmen friends of mine recommended Chapman News to me. They told me it was hands down the best experience you could hope to get before leaving school.

What do you hope to do with the skills you learned?
By learning the ins and outs of running a studio and the news story workflow in college I have a huge leg up when it comes to integrating into the workforce after school. When I graduate I hope to work in local or national news on the production side.

How do you manage the responsibilities of the class?
Creating a balance is easy if you love what you are doing. You are always able to find time to conduct interviews or stack the show on your days off or in-between classes.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a newcomer?
The one piece of advice I would give to a newcomer is to try as many positions as possible and to really give it your all. You may think you want to one type of roll in the news studio but then you start working another and you find that it fits you much better.

What aspect do you most enjoy?
I really like the chapman news workflow and getting to see the finished product at the end of a newscast after all the hard work our team has put into creating it each week. I love to learn about the stories happening around orange county that we have produced.

As graduation gets closer and closer, let’s look back at former Chapman News reporters and see what they are up to today!

Meet Kinsely Rolph!

Q: How have you been since Chapman News?
KR: “I’ve been great since Chapman News! I miss our wonderful newsroom but I am incredibly lucky to have started my producer career in the station I am at now. I work as our morning daybreak producer. I produce our 5:30/6:30AM newscasts. I will hit my one year mark at my station, WMUR, this June!”

Q: What did you learn on Chapman News?
KR: “I gained an astronomical amount of skills during my time with Chapman News. I produced 30 newscasts for OC and it was a fantastic opportunity to prepare for the role I am in now. One of the biggest skills I learned in Chapman News was properly stacking a show where the flow of the stories felt conversational, concise, and clear to our viewers. Chapman News also really helped me improve my writing skills but that is something that I still work at on a daily basis (as everyone in the news business does). A third skill I gained while working with Chapman News was how to properly coordinate and manage a newsroom team through my time executive producing. It’s helped me to be able to organize complicated live shots with my reporters on the scene now where I now feel confident producing shows where my entire crew is live on the scene, including my anchors.”

Q: How was the transition from Chapman News to the news industry?
KR: “Chapman News was the best preparation I could have ever asked for to help transition into a professional newsroom out of college. I started working less than a month after graduation and I would not have had as smooth of a transition that I did had it not been for Chappy News. My biggest transition has been my work schedule as producing for the mornings causes me to work nights. So, needless to say, my daily sleep schedule was a transition to adjust to.”
