Sometimes weddings don’t always go as planned but we filled that time with bridal portraits while we waited for the rain to pass. Gorgeous bridal portraits and a first look with no rain? “I’m going to take some pretty pictures for you”

I think about these words often. Unknowingly, these are the last words I said to my dad as I hugged him and told him I loved him. I was leaving the hospital headed to photograph a wedding in Birmingham. I was happy I was able to spend the few days before with him but optimistic there would surely be more time with him when I got back.

Growing up, it felt like my dad always had a camera in his hand to document moments throughout our lives - recitals, musicals, games, family vacations, graduation, the list goes on. He also photographed many precious moments in other people’s lives. Honestly, growing up I rolled my eyes when we had to get all my family together to take a picture not realizing how important these pictures are.

I have always considered myself creative but never did I think I would also become a photographer like my dad. In 2017, I got a wild hair to start filming weddings even though my only experience was filming videos for different organizations in college - with a flip camera I might add (who remembers those?!). I invested in some equipment to get started and booked my first wedding which my dad also accompanied me to! I was able to learn so much from him and work side by side on wedding days with him. He even bought himself new cameras and audio equipment and started filming some great videos on his own! He was always so eager and willing to help me whenever I needed an extra hand at weddings and even drove me across the state to a wedding when I wasn’t feeling so well during my early pregnancy. Photography brought us closer together and allowed us to share many special memories together.

Somewhere along the way I somehow became the new family photographer and brought my camera and tripod on family vacations to take the big family portraits! Oh, the irony. But I was finally able to realize how important pictures are to preserve the special memories and time we have with our loved ones.

The day my dad passed away, Michael and I just so happened to be in the ceremony site while the singer/pianist warmed up for the ceremony. The words he sang spoke to us and truly brought us comfort that day:

“I’ve learned how to sing, through the stormy winds and rain;
I’ve learned how to praise, when tests and trials come my way;
For my hope and trust is in the lord.

In the midnight hour, I can call on that great name, the name of Jesus;
He reigns in victory, let all heaven and earth sing, in the name of Jesus.”

That song is exactly what I needed to hear that day. Many tried to talk me out of going to the wedding that day but I knew that was where I needed to be. I felt close to my dad while I was there and always will any time I have a camera in my hand.

And yes, I did take some really REALLY pretty pictures that day like I promised my dad. But, I’ve also reflected on what pretty pictures can look like. They don’t have to be perfectly posed or planned. Pretty pictures capture the moments that bring us true joy. So, if you see me at what seems like a basic event with my cameras, just know I’m taking some pretty pictures because they are of memories that I want to keep forever. And, I encourage you to take some pretty pictures, too! Whatever that may mean for you!
