VOTE YES on Measure 23-49. It just makes sense!!!

05/01/2012

When Measure 23-49 passes in 2012 (23¢ per 1,000 of assessed property, that is less than $2 a month and about 6¢ a day), this will be good news in more than one way. The Malheur County Jail Bond (35.7¢) retires in 2012, and when Measure 23-49 passes, taxes in Malheur County will still be reduced by 12.7¢ per $1000 assessed value in 2013. Support local 4-H, Research, and Extension and vote YES on Measure 23-49.

The MAEC successfully got Measure 23-49 on the May 15, 2012, ballot after over 1,800 signatures were collected and Malheur County held two public hearings. The measure proposes to raise $365,000 with a tax rate of $0.23/$1000 assessed value. For example if the assessed value of a house is $100,000 the homeowner would pay $23.00 per year.

As the Malheur Ag and Extension Coalition moves forward with the service district campaign, one frequently asked question is:
How much will the service district cost the property owner?
The assessment rate will be 23¢ per $1,000 of assessed value. For example if the assessed value of a house is $100,000 the home owner would pay $23.00 per year.

We are all in the Ag business, even the retired school teacher, city worker, etc. Everyone likes a good nutritious meal and that is brought to us through the help of research, extension, and agriculture. As we have seen on the state and federal level when incomes go down so do goods and services. Research is vital to keep our area competitive on a local, state, and global level. We do not want to look to other countries for our food, and that affects everyone.

Many local businesses (McCain Foods, Amalgamated Sugar, Nunhems Seed, Seminis Seed and all the valley's onion packing companies among them) are dependent on research conducted at Malheur Experiment Station and the transfer of this knowledge to the grower through Extension.
