“My first drug dealer was one of my doctors.”

He probably didn’t even realize it, she explained, swiveling her chair to face me. She—Ashley Cherniss, late thirties, long blonde hair, totem-like tattoos, and an infectious smile—sat across from me in a conference room of Stephen Center. In the 40 years since its inception, the shelter has served over 43,000 individuals experiencing homelessness. Cherniss is the community engagement coordinator.

Read Korina Roberts article, who took on an immersion experience at Stephen Center for Omaha Magazine to discover what happens when someone is homeless.

Summer and her husband, Jeremy, purchased a tree-lined lot in Valley, Nebraska, in 2021, but construction of the home took longer than expected. Between her health battle, COVID setbacks, the wild swings in material prices, and the building supply chain collapse, the Slechtas were unable to move into their home until February 2024.

The east-facing windows in the main living space offer a nearly unobstructed view of the lake, with natural light and neutral tones throughout to subtly draw the eye to the home’s most striking feature.

If there’s one thing Omaha Westside High School linebacker Christian Jones reinforced to himself through all his recruiting trips in June as one of the best college football prospects in the state, it’s about how much he values his opportunity to sleep.

Jones has caught the attention of coaches from the most elite college football programs since he was a high-school freshman. But he has remained grounded through the process of everyone else telling him about his potential.

I am an autodidact.

It’s not something I admit to just anybody, mainly because most people don’t know what an autodidact is. In fact, many would embarrassingly interpret it as something that the nuns warned all of us Catholic boys against. Others would think it implied I was the guy in the service department of a car dealership who pushed the $200 alignment special when all the customer actually needs is a fuse replaced under the dash. Still others think an autodidact is something a didact does all by itself, which is actually close to correct, but not very enlightening.

A few years ago, Cordial Cherry regular Tim Brummels, CEO of Synbiotic Health, approached chocolatier Melissa Stephens with an intriguing pitch: to make a probiotic chocolate.

The scientists at Synbiotic Health were trying to figure out why metabolic disorders had been on the rise over the past few decades.

As the packaging for the Ele Chocolates states, “Ele Chocolates is a labor of love between artisanal chocolatiers and esteemed researchers that are dedicated to developing a probiotic supplement that is effective and nutritious as it is delicious.”

The Cordial Cherry, located at the Shops of Legacy in Wright Plaza, is well-known for decadent chocolate-covered cherry cordials and

Tim Kasher has always been a nomad.

It comes from his insatiable appetite for movies, music, literature, or really any art form.

Of course, Kasher will always be, upon first reference, frontman to Cursive.

While Cursive may be the headliners and his other projects—The Good Life and his solo musical work—are the undercards on Kasher’s long list of artistic output, there have also been screenplays, novels, and films.

Advancing cardiac treatments, attracting talent, job creation, and spurring economic development are just a few of the direct and ancillary benefits experts are predicting for the University of Nebraska Medical Center - UNMC, thanks to a recent grant awarding $12 million to the institution’s Center for Heart & Vascular Research.

The award solidifies the organization’s already stellar reputation as a national leader in the field of cardiac medicine, said Dr. Dele Davies, interim UNMC chancellor.

“We have one of the top cardiac centers, between UNMC and Nebraska Medicine, in the country,” he said. “What we’ve been able to do over several years is to bring together outstanding top physicians and surgeons and bring together a strong cadre of outstanding researchers who aim to improve cardiac health, not just for Nebraska, but for the whole nation.

Danielle Herzog had a great career as a teacher and was going strong when, in 2020, her life began to take a turn.

In early March 2020, she received a call from her doctor’s office informing her that her recent mammogram showed some irregularity.

She went into her doctor’s office alone several days later for a biopsy, which revealed that she had two malignant tumors right next to each other in her breast.

Through it all, her determination and spirit enabled her to be resilient and accepting of the changes she has gone through mentally, physically, and emotionally. She is now working on a middle-grade book and recovering from the surgeries and chemotherapy.

Read about her experience.
