Washington Newspaper Publishers Association

Washington Newspaper Publishers Association Washington Newspaper Publishers Association is an advocate for community newspapers, freedom of the press and open government.

The association is dedicated to helping members advance editorial excellence, financial viability, professional development, and a high standard of publication quality and community leadership. WNPA represents about 89 community newspapers in Washington state. It is the successor to the Washington Press Association, founded in 1887 by newspapers in Dayton, Ellensburg, Seattle, Tacoma, Yakima and W

alla Walla. In accordance with its bylaws, WNPA offers four types of membership. While publications must meet certain criteria to join, Regular Members are general-interest community newspapers that publish at least twice a month. Associate Members are either general-interest or niche publications and publish at least monthly. Affiliate Members include businesses and educational institutions that are not in the newspaper business but have related interests. Honorary Life Membership is awarded to publishers who have been a regular member of WNPA for 35 years and are still active in that capacity, and to other individuals the Board of Trustees wishes to honor. The Executive Committee and Board of Trustees meet at least quarterly to manage the association's work.

“The La Conner Weekly News has been an excellent example of the kind of journalism that is engaged in their community and in their government processes. To lose any newspaper leaves a void of oversight and accountability, and it is crucial that we keep our newspapers publishing in this state and I’m committed to that.” - Ellen Hiatt, Executive Director, the WNPA.

Thank you to the Salish Current for your coverage of the La Conner Weekly News' transition to new ownership. Fingers crossed we are able to keep this community's gem of a newspaper thriving.

A community newspaper is, indeed, the glue. LaConner, WA is gathering to find a transition option.

Greetings Neighbors! Please consider joining the first gathering of the minds meeting to "Save the La Conner Weekly Newspaper" on Wed., Sept. 25, 7:00-8:30pm at the Civic Garden Club, 622 Second Street, La Conner. I think we all agree the independent newspaper is a valuable piece of 'glue' for our town and so, hopefully, we'll be able to find a path forward to continue publication since 1879. Hope to see you there, thank you.

If you ever begin to think that the everything is on the internet, think again. The Washington State Library's collection of newspapers throughout the state's history includes over 50,000 pieces of microfilm and 132 newspaper subscriptions. The library maintains the subscriptions in print until they're captured for posterity on microfilm.

And they work with communities throughout the state to capture the historic collections of newspapers which, over the past century, have recorded our communities' trials and triumphs.

Take a Tour of the Washington State Library on this free tour for journalists and publishers with Shawn Schollmeyer, the Washington Digital Newspapers Coordinator.

The library’s resources provide rich insight into the history of journalism, but also provide context for any number of stories being researched by journalists. The library is also a repository for state and federal publications, providing a rich resource, including the provenance of legislation.

Fun fact: You can search some of the collection online: https://washingtondigitalnewspapers.org/

The Washington State Supreme Court wants to identify juveniles by initials only in court filings, apparently regardless of the crime they commit. Here's part of the discussion of the court's rules committee. The court refused to allow members of the media to participate in the discussion, despite early objection to the rule by daily and weekly newspapers and broadcasters across the state.
