Tonight was the last live shift for Senorita Luisa Garcia, host of “Ritmo Latino”, on OWWR before she sets sail to serve in the United States Navy this September. Always great to be on deck with my OWWR family, as DJ Sandra Dee ensured we gave her a proper send off in OWWR style. You are loved, you will be missed, and we know you will become the master of your new craft as you and your colleagues protect us and our shoreline. So let’s clap our hands for our DJ, News Director, Staff Member, MAC Award winner, Alumnus of SUNY Old Westbury, and now a member of the United States Navy! He has the longest running radio show in this format possibly worldwide, (… as we await the industry to confirm). For nearly 50 years on-air and on stage, and then some, his dedication to his craft and to his listeners is beyond reproach. Having worked with him for nearly a decade, and knowing him for a solid quarter century, he truly embodies the passion of our art form and we are honored to welcome him to this address. Carpe Diem was the theme for OWWR at one of our favorites homes the Paramount in Huntington, NY as rock legends Asia graced the stage for a night of some of their most memorable music. Asia brought the heat in every moment, as they reminded the fans of why their music has spanned over 4 decades with world class musicians. So I raided my story box once again, thank God it remembers more than me! I came across a rare gem from when I saw them last in 2012, (‘only time will tell’, ha!). Great night, great new memories!

Today, we celebrate our country’s declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1776. Today, 248 years ago many historical Americans of significance fought for our freedom from British rule. Traditionally the day is to be celebrated basking in patriotism and festivities. It was the Revolutionary War, (or American Revolution, or the American War for Independence… pick a name), that was the catalyst for this feat. Clearly none of us were alive to recall the Sugar Act, or the Stamp Act, or having lived in a colony, although it all appeared to have happened.

Why is OWWR going down “Schoolhouse Rock” lane, because we should. Today we celebrate our way of life, our ethics, our values, our armed forces, our friends, our families, and ultimately our freedom. So, to those that accomplished this achievement, and to those that continue to uphold it, and for those that will choose to in the future, we thank you. Today, be safe, enjoy responsibly, and enjoy whatever show you gaze upon. Wishing all a Happy 4th of July, (even if it wasn’t a federal holiday until 1870, then ratified in 1941 to make it paid for federal employees)! 😁

Dear OWWR Family,

Please celebrate with me a former student, SUNY Old Westbury alumni, and now master of his musical domain, and a fine individual Giovanni Dainotto, host of “Five N’ Dime”, (5-7 PM/MONDAYS), as he celebrates 5 years on OWWR! On a personal note, Gio continues to be gentlemen, an asset to our facility, a dedicated OWWR staff member, who truly embodies the mission of OWWR, and someone that we can all rely on. He was at my side when we learned that could enter our facilities again during the pandemic, and rolled up sleeves and got to work, one of many stories I will never forget. He is a family man, tells good jokes sometimes, a true professional at his day job, and a decent fellow Italian. Here is to 5 more years on OWWR good sir, and many thanks for all you have done and continue to do.

The Paramount, in Huntington, NY set the stage once more for the mighty sounds of Get The Led Out. These folks visit our home away from home about 4 times a year, and they are must see. I call last night ‘The night of the 3 J’s’, my bud should figure it out. Then I started to think, the only other band, for me, that could do Zepplin is the Jason Bonham Experience, (you know him, right?). So I raided my story box, thank god it remembers more than me! I’ve been seeing these guys for some time. Bonham also had real estate and at that show, different venue, Michael Devlin was on bass… if you recall from our Dead Daises post in NYC. Here’s the kicker, Robert Plant was at Jones Beach last night! Great show GTLO, great crowd, as always great time, and we’ll see you again! Great solos, great sound, great showmanship!

Huntington, NY, set the stage for this rescheduled show with Richard Marx and Rick Springfield both legends in their own catalogs. Unlike our meeting last August, the iteration of this revised performance was not needed, but always good to shake the man’s hand anyway! I say next year, Richard Marx full tour, and full band! The good news is they both still got it… and who knew Springfield played ‘Stairway’!

The Press Club of Long Island celebrated their 50th anniversary at Fox Hollow in Woodbury, NY, honoring the best in Long Island journalism. What a great honor once more to part of such a special and necessary organization that supports freedom of the press in association with solidarity here on Long Island. Congratulations to all the winners, and the new hall of fame inductees.

OWWR had a great evening, and to celebrate why not hang out with my dear colleague and friend environmental journalist, hall of famer, published author, SUNY Old Westbury college professor, founder and first PCLI President, Karl Grossman. Always a great time with him and the OWWR family.

On May 22 – May 28, New York City celebrated “Fleet Week New York 2024”. This event is to celebrate those that serve in our United States Military. OWWR, Old Westbury Web Radio was on-site for the first time ever, and we were invited on board the USS Bataan.

OWWR News Director Luisa Garcia and OWWR DJ Sandra Dee executed a variety of interviews throughout their visit on shore and on land. The Garden City Hotel set the stage for this year’s 2024 “Fair Media Council Folio Awards”. This year so many great broadcasters and journalists honored, including Rita Ciolli-Newsday, Nick Fox-The New York Times, Paul Haven-The Associated Press, Sandy Kenyon-WABC-TV, Debby Krenek-Newsday, Anthony Mason-CBS News, and Michael Powell-The Atlantic.

Our table wasn’t too shabby either! Our media family should be buying frames today as OWTV in the Political News category won for the work “Robin Rue Simmons – How the Next Generations Can Lead on the Road to Reparations”. Then OWTV earned a second award in the War & Protest category for “OW Speaks: Israel-Palestine Conflict”.

It was great to see so many old friends, truly a lovely and memorable affair. Looking forward to next year! Congratulations to the SUNY Old Westbury Student Media Team! Be proud, stand tall, and keep up the great work! What an honor to work with so many talented future broadcast and journalism leaders!

On May 22 – May 28, New York City celebrated “Fleet Week New York 2024”. This event is to celebrate those that serve in our United States Military. OWWR, Old Westbury Web Radio was on-site and invited on board the USS Bataan to speak with IC3 Towery, Intelligence Specialist; ET3R, Electronics Technician. Plus, Lt. Jake Ryan from the US Navy Public Affairs office was our right hand during this visit and shared his expertise with us and our listeners.

89 North in Patchogue, NY, was truly a delight for the “80’s Jam”, benefitting the David Z Foundation. The foundation was started by singer/guitarist Paulie Z in memory of his brother David Z. I ask all in the OWWR music and industry community to visit them online, as they are a truly unique global opportunity for children in the performing arts. https://www.davidzfoundation.org/ .

Paulie Z hosted the affair and brought world renowned musicians from around the globe to perform at this special fundraiser. Even Corey Glover of Living Colour lent his voice to the cause. Plus, there was no shortage of young and talented local artists on the stage!
I met so many amazing people from so many different areas of our industry, thank you to Christina Coulter for connecting us to so many. Here is a picture of event organizers, musicians, and Paulie Z on my right, all class acts, (thank you Rich Balter!).

Plus, I met the future of music and it is in great hands with Kobi Reese, check him out! https://kobireese.com/ . This young 13 year old man can do it all, on any instrument, and Night Ranger will never sound the same to me again! We may have to get him on OWWR!

What a fabulous evening with great company, and so glad I caught up with some folks I have not seen in nearly 20 years!

The Dead Daisies kicked off their 2024 tour here in NY, and OWWR was front and center! Comprised of some of the most celebrated musicians in history Doug Aldrich, (Whitesnake, Dio, Hughes ++), John Corabi, (the once front man of Motley Crue), David Lowy, (you need to look this guy up, too much to type, from tycoon to string tearer!), Michael Devin, (Kenny Wayne Sheperd, Lynch Mob, Whitesnake, Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience, ++), and Tommy Clufetos, (Nugent, Cooper, Zombie, Ozzy, ++).
Truly a must see for professionally timed tracks, that make you think, move, bustle and flow! So great seeing one of my oldest OWWR friends, and making a new one! Great night, great music!
