John 1: 1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him not even one thing was made that has come into being. In Him was life and the power to bestow life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend or overpower it. There came a man commissioned and sent from God, whose name was John. This man came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe in Christ, the Light, through him. John was not the Light, but came to testify about the Light.

And there it was—the true Light, which, coming into the world, enlightens everyone. Christ was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to that which was His own - that which belonged to Him - His world, His creation, His possession, and to those who were His own people, but they did not receive and welcome Him. But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the right, authority and privilege to become children of God, that is, to those who believe in, adhere to, trust in, and rely on His Name - who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh or of man, but of God – having a divine and supernatural birth—being spiritually transformed, renewed, and sanctified. And the Word (Christ) became flesh, and lived among us; and we actually saw His glory, glory as belongs to the One and only begotten Son of the Father, the Son who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, who is full of grace and truth.

Ephesians 2: 4-10

But God, being so very rich in mercy, because of His great and wonderful love with which He loved us, even when we were spiritually dead and separated from Him because of our sins, has now made us spiritually alive together with Christ, for by His grace - His undeserved favor and mercy - you have been saved from God’s judgment. And He raised us up together with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, because we are in Christ Jesus, and He did this so that in the ages to come He might clearly show the immeasurable and unsurpassed riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus by providing for our redemption. For it is by grace that you have been saved through faith. And this salvation is not through your own effort, but it is a gift from God; it is not as a result of your works or attempts to keep the Law - so that no one will be able to boast or take credit in any way for his salvation. The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness of it,
The world, and those who dwell in it.
For He has founded it upon the seas
And established it upon the streams and the rivers.
Who may ascend onto the mountain of the Lord?
And who may stand in His holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to what is false,
Nor has sworn oaths deceitfully.
He shall receive a blessing from the Lord,
And righteousness from the God of his salvation.
This is the description of those who diligently seek Him
and require Him as their greatest need,
Who seek Your face, even as did Jacob.

Judges 2: 1-5

“Now the Angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And He said, “I brought you up from Egypt and led you to the land which I swore to give to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you, and as for you, you shall not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed Me; what is this that you have done? So I also said, ‘I will not drive your enemies out before you; but they will be like thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you.’” When the Angel of the Lord had spoken these words to all the Israelites, the people raised their voices and wept. So they named that place Bochim (weepers); and there they offered sacrifices to the Lord.”

The Lord’s desire is to be in covenant relationship with us, meaning that we will enjoy all the benefits of being in union with the Almighty God of the Universe. This is the best deal we could ever hope for, as He makes available to us all of His many blessings, His divine protection and favour, and His abiding Presence which fills us with His peace, joy and love as we face the trials of this life. Our side of the deal is to love Him and obey Him. This is the same in the New Covenant as in the Old. Jesus said “If you love Me, you will obey My commandments.” God is the same yesterday, today and forever. Christ is now the Mediator of the New Covenant which is based on better promises for us, because the Father has poured out His glorious grace and kindness upon us. However, we must never forget that this is still a covenant, and God requires us to be a covenant-keeping people, as He is a faithful covenant-keeping God!

(Romans 5: 1-5)
Since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own, but the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith in Jesus. I want to know Christ, and be willing to participate in His suQerings in order to experience the mighty resurrection power that raised Him from the dead. I have not yet achieved these things nor have I reached perfection, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. "But thanks be to God who gives us the victory as conquerors through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, always doing your best and doing more than is needed, being continually aware that your labor in the Lord - even to the point of exhaustion - is not futile nor wasted; it is never without purpose."

How good to be reminded that we stand as conquerors in the victory already won by our Almighty God! We are surely able to be steadfast, immovable, and excellent, not because of ourselves, but because of Him who lives inside of us. This calls to mind another exhortation found in Hebrews 12: “So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. Mark out a straight path for your feet, so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.”

During these troubling times we need to remember where our help comes from. Our God is the Ultimate Source of all things good, which includes our hope, joy and peace. He has given us His Son, His Holy Spirit, precious promises which frame our reality as believers, and every blessing which we enjoy in our lives. He is the Rock who never changes, our Refuge and Strength, an ever-present Help in times of need. We can be confident because our hope and trust rests securely in Him, and not what our eyes and ears perceive in this troubled world.

Matthew 5:23-24
"Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift."

This Yom Kippur, we reflect on this important teaching of reconciliation, where this is shown to take prioirty even over presenting our offerings to God. This highlights how important it is to God that we remain in love, peace and unity with each other, in as far as this depends on us. Let us seek forgiveness where we have wronged, and be ready to forgive others who have wronged us. This is the way of peace.
