This is the playlist from last evening’s Haze program on WEES celebrating the timeless music created by four of the 2025 inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Carol Kaye and the late Nicky Hopkins, Joe Cocker and Warren Zevon. Due to the show’s time limitations, I was able to only scratch the surface of the rich musical legacy that each left us. Of course, we have a wealth of recordings and videos of the music itself: dedicated playlists for each are available on all of the major streaming services. In addition, check out “The Wrecking Crew,” the wonderful 2008 documentary film about Carol Kaye and the other elite LA session musicians directed by Denny Tedesco, the son of one such Crew member, guitarist Tommy Tedesco; 2011’s “And On Piano…Nicky Hopkins: The Extraordinary Life of Rock’s Greatest Session Man,” by Julian Dawson and “The Session Man,” last year’s fine film directed and produced by the late Mike Treen; “Mad Dogs and Englishmen,” a film that captures the magic of Joe Cocker in concert in his prime; and “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon” the often harrowing account of his journey written by his widow, Crystal Zevon. And please watch the episode of the David Letterman Show dedicated to Warren available on You Tube at https://youtu.be/giTi8KWSZl4?feature=shared. Broadcast on October 30, 2002, when it was clear when his days were numbered, it is a remarkable glimpse of the courage, wisdom, humor and clear-headedness by which Warren Zevon faced the end of his remarkable life. As Warren observes, David Letterman is “the best friend my music ever had” and the love and respect each had for each other is quite moving. Sometimes tough to watch, but eminently rewarding. Finally, “The Warren Zevon Collection: 1982-93” offers over an hour of Warren’s performances on the program over the years. It can be found at https://youtu.be/QA8iHRNX2eg?feature=shared.

Thanks for listening last night and enjoy every sandwich.
