With Thanksgiving behind us, we are slowly easing our way through the waning weeks of the current year as we hurtle toward 2025. For many, this time of the season is one for thoughtful contemplation of the past twelve months, considering lessons learned. While such reflection can be an enriching exercise, I have other plans for this Thursday evening’s Haze program on WEES, if you are so inclined. Please join me for some well-deserved R&R from 2024’s 366 days (it had to be a leap year, didn't it?). I have selected three solid commercial-free hours of classic music, each song chosen to help lift year-end spirits. My only request: TURN IT UP!

If you are within the reach of our WEES broadcast signal, please tune in this Thursday night from 7 to 10 p.m. on 107.9 MHz FM. If not, stream us globally at https://www.wees.org. You can also listen through free downloadable radio apps like TuneIn, or over smart speakers by saying, “Alexa, play WEES radio.” Visit that official station website and, for updates, check out our “WEES Radio” Facebook site.

Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream. Happy holidays from WEES and the Haze!

12/03/2024

During the last month, numerous tributes have celebrated the artistry of British keyboard player Nicky Hopkins, hailed by many as the world’s greatest rock session musician before his untimely death thirty years ago. This renewed interest stems from the recent streaming release, available in the U.S. on platforms such as Amazon and Apple TV, of The Session Man, the excellent documentary about Mr. Hopkins’ life and work. A highly sought-after session musician, he contributed to iconic recordings from artists like the Kinks, the Who, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and Jefferson Airplane.

While the documentary effectively tells Nicky Hopkins' compelling story through interviews with many of the stars who worked with him, at 90 minutes, it was obviously impossible for the film to include many of the recordings that showcase his genius. To provide an overview of his actual performances, last month, I aired two, commercial-free, three-hour editions of my radio program The Haze on WEES highlighting his remarkable body of work. With the positive reaction to both the film and my shows, I spent the Thanksgiving break curating even more of his recordings, including some surprising collaborations that convincingly demonstrate how Nicky elevated every session in which he participated, regardless of its obscurity (like the track we will enjoy from ELO forefathers the Move’s 1968 British-only debut album covering San Francisco’s legendary Moby Grape, supercharged by Nicky’s pounding guest piano).

Join me this Thursday evening from 7 to 10 p.m. on WEES, 107.9 MHz FM if you are within the reach of our broadcast signal, or stream us globally at https://www.wees.org to experience this great music. You can also listen through apps like TuneIn, or over smart speakers by saying, “Alexa, play WEES radio.” Visit that station website and, for updates, check out our “WEES Radio” Facebook site.

I think you will enjoy what you hear Thursday night!
