Since its 1978 debut, ABC’s Wide World of Sports has captured the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” That stark dichotomy feels particularly relevant now, with the impact of November’s election unfolding in Washington and the ongoing NFL playoffs in full swing. Emotions are running high, but the timeless music that we share each week on WEES’s the Haze offers a welcome escape. This week, enjoy three commercial-free hours of this much-needed musical therapy.

If you are within the reach of our WEES broadcast signal, please tune in this Thursday night from 7 to 10 p.m. on 107.9 MHz FM or stream us globally at https://www.wees.org. You can also listen through free downloadable radio apps like TuneIn, or over smart speakers (“Alexa, play WEES radio”). Visit that official station website and, for updates, check out this Facebook site.

I hope you can join me Thursday night for three hours of this wonderful music. And may Garth Hudson rest in peace. The last man standing from the Band, he passed away this morning at 87.

01/07/2025

This week on WEES’s the Haze, we will commemorate the 60th anniversary of 1965: a pivotal year in which our music transformed in both form and subject. That was the year that It truly came of age as songwriters and performers began addressing the serious issues of the day, transcending the previous lyrical limits of school, love, cars and surfing.

British groups like the Yardbirds and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and Chicago’s Paul Butterfield Blues Band reintroduced us to our American blues tradition that we had inexplicably overlooked, showing the way with newly coronated guitar royalty like Clapton, Beck, Page, Taylor, Bloomfield and Green. Folk musicians, led by Bob Dylan, went electric with mesmerizing results, inspiring his contemporaries like John Sebastian, Jim McGuinn, Zal Yanovsky and John Phillips to follow suit. This breathtaking new music sparked creativity in garages everywhere, producing an avalanche of fresh innovative bands. Meanwhile, Motown continued to deliver the Sound of Young America from Hitsville U.S.A., 2648 W. Grand Boulevard in Detroit, entering the mainstream with unforgettable songs about the universal themes of love and brotherhood.

Fertile music scenes blossomed in communities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Memphis, New York and Nashville, setting the stage for even more groundbreaking artists in the years to come.

If the memory of all of this all brings a smile on your face, join us this week, as we celebrate 1965 with three commercial-free hours of groundbreaking music. We’ll revisit the best-selling iconic recordings of the era and sample the early works by artists whose talents later blossomed to legendary status.

Tune in this Thursday night from 7 to 10 p.m. on 107.9 MHz FM if you are within the reach of our WEES broadcast signal. Otherwise, stream us globally at https://www.wees.org. You can also listen through free downloadable radio apps like TuneIn, or over smart speakers by saying, “Alexa, play WEES radio.” Visit our official website or follow us on Facebook at WEES Radio.

I hope you will join me for this special celebration. It all starts Thursday night!
