My path as a civil rights attorney—and then as D.A.—was shaped by John Burris’ fight for justice. A new Public Accountability Unit was established within the district attorney’s office by the honorable Pamela Price. Price had pledged to ensure accountability, emphasizing her commitment to addressing police misconduct, particularly in-custody deaths. She stated that the formation of the PAU unit marked the beginning of the reckoning that Alameda County had sought in holding police and other public officials responsible for their actions.
One of the notable achievements of the honorable Pamela Price was her dedication to enhancing and managing victims' services, particularly through the Victim-Witness Assistance Division, which had suffered from significant mismanagement. Many were unaware that Alameda County faced a staggering backlog of 300 to 400 days for victim compensation and payments to service providers.
The process involved the California Victim Compensation Board allocating funds to local district attorney’s offices to assist victims. This included covering burial costs, certain medical expenses, mental health counseling, and claims for lost income. Victims who experienced income loss were eligible for state compensation. The Victim-Witness Assistance Division primarily relied on state funding, which dictated its staffing levels through grants.
Before her leadership, the previous district attorney’s office had been remarkably inefficient in delivering compensation to victims, contributing to a statewide delay that was exacerbated by Alameda County's issues. Some mental health providers offered services at rates significantly lower than the market average, yet they faced payment delays exceeding a year.
Additionally, there was a significant backlog of U visa applications for numerous victims who required these visas to remain in the country and testify. During the tenure of the honorable Pamela Price, the backlog of U visa applications was successfully resolved.
The second annual Breaking the Chains Awareness Walk was a great success. With the support of Honorable Pamela Price, this significant event will be established as an annual tradition to commemorate human trafficking prevention month, consistently raising awareness about human trafficking, encouraging action, and protecting our community. #humantraffickingawareness #alamedacounty #oakland #protectblackgirls #protectblackwomen

Alameda County District Attorney Officer & The Consumer Justice Bureau
During Pamela Price's tenure, her Consumer Justice Bureau investigated multiple home insurance carriers, which made up 15% of California's home insurance market. These carriers were accused of orchestrating a widespread scheme to systematically underinsure California homes, providing consumers with replacement cost estimates that were significantly lower than the actual costs required to rebuild homes in the event of a disaster.
This practice violated insurance regulations that mandate inclusion of reasonable rebuilding expenses. Protecting Alameda County homeowners was one of Pamela Price's key objectives during her time in office .

January is recognized as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, and I find myself reflecting on my time as the District Attorney of Alameda County. During that period, I made a commitment to confront human trafficking directly, and I take pride in the progress and accomplishments we achieved.
I believe that raising awareness is essential in preventing human trafficking, which is why I invested in billboards at Oakland International Airport. These billboards highlight the disturbing reality of human trafficking in our community and the urgent need for attention to this issue.
Throughout my tenure, supporting victims of sex trafficking was among my top priorities. I am proud of what we accomplished, and I remain dedicated to ensuring justice for all affected individuals.
As we look ahead, let us reinforce our dedication to eradicating human trafficking in all its forms. We must remain vigilant, collaborate, and protect the vulnerable, while also holding offenders accountable.
