For decades, John Burris has been a force in the courtroom, holding police accountable and standing up for families who deserved justice. From Rodney King to Oscar Grant, his cases have shaped the movement against police brutality and exposed the truth about a broken system. Now, his legacy is front and center in "John Burris: Godfather of Police Litigation," a must-watch documentary that shows what real accountability looks like.

My path as a civil rights attorney—and then as D.A.—was shaped by John Burris’ fight for justice. And I'm continuing that fight in a new way with Pamela Price Unfiltered, a bold new podcast tackling the hard truths about systemic racism, police violence, and what it really takes to create change. No sugarcoating. No empty talk. Just real conversations that demand action.

Catch the next showing of "John Burris: Godfather of Police Litigation" on February 13 at the Richmond Public Library, and make sure to subscribe to my new podcast and newsletter, Pamela Price Unfiltered, at https://pamelapriceunfiltered.substack.com.

A new Public Accountability Unit was established within the district attorney’s office by the honorable Pamela Price. Price had pledged to ensure accountability, emphasizing her commitment to addressing police misconduct, particularly in-custody deaths. She stated that the formation of the PAU unit marked the beginning of the reckoning that Alameda County had sought in holding police and other public officials responsible for their actions.

One of the notable achievements of the honorable Pamela Price was her dedication to enhancing and managing victims' services, particularly through the Victim-Witness Assistance Division, which had suffered from significant mismanagement. Many were unaware that Alameda County faced a staggering backlog of 300 to 400 days for victim compensation and payments to service providers.

The process involved the California Victim Compensation Board allocating funds to local district attorney’s offices to assist victims. This included covering burial costs, certain medical expenses, mental health counseling, and claims for lost income. Victims who experienced income loss were eligible for state compensation. The Victim-Witness Assistance Division primarily relied on state funding, which dictated its staffing levels through grants.

Before her leadership, the previous district attorney’s office had been remarkably inefficient in delivering compensation to victims, contributing to a statewide delay that was exacerbated by Alameda County's issues. Some mental health providers offered services at rates significantly lower than the market average, yet they faced payment delays exceeding a year.

Additionally, there was a significant backlog of U visa applications for numerous victims who required these visas to remain in the country and testify. During the tenure of the honorable Pamela Price, the backlog of U visa applications was successfully resolved.
