CHANGING LANDSCAPE| Menstrual products in Warren, a year in the making

Story By Alyana W.

"If you live in Warren Olney residence hall (WO), you might have noticed a small change in the bathrooms recently — free menstrual products. If you don’t live on campus, you might be shocked; wouldn’t it be obvious to provide menstrual products for free in the bathrooms of students who menstruate?

The new menstrual products can be found in WO bathrooms in wire baskets, hanging on the bathroom wall. Included are pads, tampons and liners. While they aren’t the highest quality — the tampons have cardboard inserts, and some students have compared the pads to diapers — WO residents appreciate the gesture."

NEWS| The unlikely underdog in the fight: Following Eric Curry’s journey to the 12th Congressional District seat

Story By Tasha Poullard

"SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Sometimes referred to as the “underdog” and “unlikely candidate,” Eric Curry, a 27-year-old San Franciscan is running for San Francisco’s 12th Congressional District seat. He officially launched his campaign to win the congressional seat once held by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D- San Francisco) in the Bay Area on Monday April 19, 2021."

NEWS| Her college announced its plans for closure but she still has hope for the future

Story By Iris Kingery

"“I didn’t choose Mills, Mills pretty much chose me,” Mills sophomore Tyy Hayes says as she stands surrounded by the characteristic bright green meadows and Eucalyptus trees on the Mills campus.

And it’s true: her journey to Mills was one of happenstance. Hayes, who is studying politics, economics, policy, and law, initially applied to Mills at the suggestion of her high school administrator, an alumna. After receiving her acceptance letter, she chose Mills largely because of its location, California, where she had always wanted to live, but came to love the College for much more than its geography."

CHANGING LANDSCAPE| “Changemakers in Oakland” and Mills Institute present major changes at Mills College

Story By Angel Fabre

"Amidst conversations surrounding Mills College transitioning into a Mills “institute” by 2023, the President’s Office announced on March 25 that the college will be the location for the “Changemakers in Oakland” program at UC Berkeley. Scheduled for the 2021-2022 academic year, the program will bring 200 UC Berkeley first-years of all genders to campus, where they will live and attend classes. These students will have their own dedicated courses and living spaces.

This is a brand-new program offered by UC Berkeley where students will explore Oakland while experiencing some of the unique aspects of Mills, such as the single-occupancy rooms and small class sizes. According to the UC Berkeley Changemaker website, the program will offer a “small liberal-arts college experience within a larger UC campus.”

PRESS RELEASED| Press released: A little ending

Story By Felicia Payomo

"With only days between now and when my fellow graduates accept our diplomas, I find it necessary to reflect on my time at Mills College. Even as I logged off my final class, I was not able to fully grasp my impending reality. I had always anticipated a grandiose ending to my undergraduate years — a large celebration, the cap and gown combined with the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment. But because of the current state of the world, I’ve come to terms with not fulfilling those dreams of grandeur celebration.

As a transfer student, Mills college was always my first choice, and after being a student here for almost three academic years, I’ve had many opportunities that shaped my perspective and overall character. One of those experiences was joining the Campanil."

COMMENCEMENT| Affinity graduations continue during the pandemic

Story By Angel Fabre

"Commencement is an important milestone for many college graduates to commemorate their accomplishment of completing their degree. In Spring 2020, the pandemic resulted in several colleges canceling in-person graduation plans, including Mills, which postponed its 132nd commencement ceremony.

Affinity groups at Mills have a history of organizing additional graduation events to celebrate student accomplishments and focus on students of color. This year, the Black Student Collective (BSC), KAPWA and the Asian Pacific Islander Student Alliance (APISA) have organized virtual graduation events to hold space for their communities and continue the tradition during the pandemic."

PRESS RELEASED| Press released: Four years later, not walking the stage

Story By Grace Patterson

"From the first moment I stepped onto the Mills College campus in 2016, I knew in my heart that Mills was the place for me. Walking across campus with a group of other potential students, I imagined grabbing lunches at the Tea Shop between classes, listening to the Campanil Bell Tower chime every 15 minutes, attending classes in the historic Mills Hall and thriving in my first few years of adulthood. As I excitedly took notes, making sure to draw stars and hearts next to every fun fact that our tour guide recited to us, we stopped on Holmgren Meadow in front of the big foliage “M”. Our tour guide beamed at the group and said “If you choose Mills, in four years, you’ll be walking the stage right here when you graduate!”

They never could have predicted that even though I chose Mills, I would never walk the stage."

PRESS RELEASED| “Who am I, if not a student?”: Farewell letter from the Editor-in-chief of the Campanil, Angel Fabre

Story By Angel Fabre

"Heather Davis, one of my favorite characters in the musical comedy “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”, has a bit of a crisis when she is forced to graduate from her community college after taking every single course offered. In the third episode of season three, Heather contemplates what her life will look like as a graduate in a not-so-enthusiastic musical number, and asks a question that I have often wondered myself: “Who am I, if not a student?”

NEWS| Dylyn Turner-Keener, Ashlee Davis and Jessica Hairston create a plan for Black wellness at Mills

Story By Angel Fabre

"When President Dylyn Turner-Keener and Vice-President Ashlee Davis ran for their positions in the Associated Students of Mills College (ASMC), they wanted to represent Black students on campus and have the power to amplify their voices in a way that would create change. Through conversations with fellow student Jessica Hairston, a sophomore at Mills, the three students concluded that their interests aligned with creating resources, accountability systems and classroom protocols for the wellness of Black students at Mills.

The Black Wellness Proposal began when Turner-Keener, Davis and Hairston shared with each other their own experiences of being Black while attending Mills. From their experience, they identified possible solutions to gaps in general equities for Black students."

NEWS| DIY Kimchi Night Fundraiser supporting North Korean Refugees

Story By Tasha Poullard

"North Korea – CNN reports that authorities in Beijing are currently cracking down on a network of secret safe houses and routes that activists and organizations use to help North Koreans escape the rule of Kim Jong Un in North Korea.

Inspired by the Underground Railroad used by African American slaves to escape to freedom in the late 1700s, the secret network was set up by Korean pastors and consists of undisclosed pathways, underground tunnels and inconspicuous vehicles to assist North Korean escapees to slip into the northern border of China."

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT| Student spotlight: Julia Barker, Mills’ resident voice actor

Story By Jo Moses

"Mills student Julia Barker is graduating this year, and they’re leaving as a professional voice actor. Barker knew they wanted to be a voice actor since age 14, and they knew that they wanted to utilize their time at Mills to the fullest extent possible, so they entered Mills as a Theater Studies major “for the sake of voice acting.” In addition to taking singing classes during their time in college to improve their technical control, Barker also was able to take a course on recording techniques and learned how to use Protools while improving their audio editing skills."

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT| Student Spotlight: Activist Grace Hirschfeld

Story By Madeline Hsu

"A junior at Mills, Grace Hirschfeld points to her roots as a San Franciscan and her Chinese and Lithuanian mixed heritage to explain her dedication to activism.

“I’m really passionate about fighting for the Asian American community,” Hirschfeld says.

Hirschfeld has been deeply involved with the Asian Pacific Islander Student Alliance (APISA) and stepped up to be Publicity Chair this year. In this capacity, she has vitally supported the organization by managing social media and student forum postings, creating presentations and running meetings."

NEWS| As time passes, Mills loosens pandemic restrictions

Story By Ari Fitzgibbon

"At the time of this article’s publication, the 2021 spring semester is drawing to a close, leaving students at Mills with another several months of pandemic learning under their belts. In many ways, Mills’ spring COVID-19 prevention protocols were similar to those observed during the fall semester: the majority of classes were still taught entirely online, all meals were still taken to go from the Tea Shop, and students living on campus were still required to wear masks and practice social distancing at all times, except when alone or with members of their social bubble."
