What Happened To AFC’s Platform

On October 17, 2013 Afrocentric Films Collaborative (AFC) was created in Oakland, California with the mission to promote positive images and stories centered on Black culture and the global African Diaspora through film, media, and news. Over the last six years AFC operated exclusively on Facebook as a Black owned business and popular social media platform for Pan African culture amassing a popular following with class and dignity. In 2019 AFC reached 8 to 15 million people weekly and had nearly a million followers on Facebook. While we have many supporters from many backgrounds, walks of life and ethnicities it was clear from the beginning that a very racist element on Facebook did not like our content that highlighted people of African descent and wanted to silence us by any means necessary.

Well, on September 17th six days after 9/11 AFC was hacked by white extremist who posted images and videos that went against Facebook’s Community Standards and got AFC’s admins personal accounts disabled and the platform unpublished by Facebook! This was an intentional attack to censor Black voices on Facebook who promoted Black culture with dignity, class, and integrity and instead of Facebook helping us out they decided to ignore our evidence and appeals to resolve this serious situation!

We believe from our uplifting post and organic reach we were intentionally hacked by someone who may be connected to white extremist groups or a white nationalist hate group located in Kosovo. We have never approved any from that location to manage AFC’s platform!

Nevertheless, our page was still unpublished without a chance to even speak to a customer service representative or customer care because Facebook does not have a dedicated customer service line! This is a very serious cybercrime against a cultural page and we received the short end of the stick!

AFC received an alert from our email saying someone was logging into our business account, seconds later they posted an image that got the page restricted, we received a email from Facebook telling us to appeal the restriction. When we appealed this obvious mistake, instead of Facebook restoring our page, they removed the only admins account, disabled the account, and allowed the hackers full access to post race bait videos on AFC’s platform and when we went to Facebook Corporate Headquarters in Menlo Park, California instead of them hearing us out they unpublished AFC’s platform on October 10th 2019!

We have access to our Instagram and Twitter but not our Facebook and despite being extremely proactive we have not yet heard back from Facebook! We have contacted local, national and international media, the FBI, the EFF, the Attorney General office of California, State Representative Barbara Lee and Nancy Pelosi’s offices, furthermore legal representation and dozens of advocacy groups, still we have not heard back from Facebook!

We will not stop the fight to regain our platform as a business and popular platform for Black culture on Facebook however we must organize like we won't! We're extremely disappointed at Facebook as personal users and as a cultural page for Black culture and the African Diaspora! We firmly believe Facebook has a race problem and the ability to protect cultural pages against racist which is evident by how they treated us and has continued to treat Black users, Black platforms, and Black ideas on Facebook! It is clear, by Facebook not helping us to fix this ongoing problem they either don’t know, it don’t show or they don’t care about what’s going on with AFC! From that realization, we have lost all trust in Facebook’s ability to protect people of African descent on Facebook! On October 17, 2019 AFC grudgingly relaunched a new page on Facebook with several administrators, stronger cyber security, and a stronger commitment to our people and our mission!

This is our situation, however not our reality or future! We have learned a lot, and this event may have brought down a popular Black/African platform but it has also sparked a real movement! A great way to support us is to go to return back to Afrocentric Films Collaborative new Facebook platform and invite your friends and family to like our page and to join our new community group! Most likely they followed us before we got hacked and unpublished. 🙏🏿❤️

We will not be silenced or stop advocating for more positive Black images in the media and entertainment industry! This is our story and it’s only the beginning! Forever forward and never ever never ever backwards! ✊🏿❤️
