Genesee Society of Model Engineers

Genesee Society of Model Engineers The G.S.M.E was founded in 1969 by a small group of model railroad enthusiasts in the Batavia, NY area to promote the model railroad hobby and activities.

The G.S.M.E was founded in 1969 by a small group of model railroad enthusiasts in the Batavia, NY area. Early meetings were held at the homes of members. As the club grew, a location was needed for meetings and construction of club layouts. This requirement was met in the early 1980’s by renting the upper floor of a bank in the Village of Oakfield, NY. This location still serves as home to the G.S

.M.E., which now has three operating model railroads in O scale (3-rail), HO scale, and N scale. The club was incorporated in the State of New York in 1979 as a not-for-profit entity. Activities of the society range from layout construction to social events such as field trips, a summer picnic, an open house, and a holiday party. Members have use of an extensive book, magazine and video library including over 350 videos and DVD’s. Each year two train shows are held to financially support our various projects. These shows, now known as The Great Batavia Train Shows, have grown to become the largest model train shows in the Western NY region. The shows have run continuously for over 25 years, and in 2004 we celebrated our 50th train show. Today, the society’s membership is comprised of individuals from six counties who share interests including photography, railroad history, and railfanning in addition to railroad modeling. Membership is currently open, and those interested are invited to visit and learn more about the G.S.M.E.

On Saturday November 16th, a few members of G.S.M.E. Took part in a special build session where a total of 12 Free-Mo Sections were assembled (we're also looking forward to adding an additional two curve modules in the near future as well.)

Club members will be taking these modules home for personal use, but the track plan has been coordinated to model a very familiar local short line! Members are very excited to continue the project, and look forward to displaying the modules public at events in the future. Our goal is to have track laid and ready to display by the Genesee County Fair next Summer, it is a tight deadline, but we're ready to get to work!

For those that may not be familiar, Free-Mo is an HO Scale, Portable/Modular Model railroading standard used quite commonly throughout the United States, and in similar variations, Globally. across the country there are Free-Mo Meets where many Free-Mo Module owners get together and set up their modules together, to create very large layouts, capable of filling entire events centers, hockey Rinks, and Gymnasiums.

A very Special Thank you to Paul P. an experienced Free-Mo Modeler for lending us his time, resources and expertise in facilitating this build session for G.S.M.E. we are very grateful for his help!

For the Lakeshores 24' NMRA Northeastern Region Annual Convention, our club organized a rare milage excursion ride on the Falls Road Railroad on Saturday, September 21st, 2024. Our train ran from Brockport to Medina, NY and back with Genesee Valley ALCO RS-32 2035 and Depew Lancaster & Western ALCO RS-11 1804 providing the power.

Since this was a rare milage ride, it only made sense to throw in a few quick photo stops along the way. The GVT/Falls Road crew and their ALCO powered duo did not disappoint in putting on a show for the cameras. Our layover in Medina included a visit to the Medina Railroad Museum where passengers had lunch while touring the museum.

We would like to thank everyone involved for helping make this event possible! We hope those that bought a ticket had a wonderful and pleasant experience with us over the weekend! We even included some photos taken from the event! Photos featured in this post are courtesy of GSME members Mark Klingel, Mike Pyszczek, and Paul Stamp.
