Happy Section Sunday! Shoutout to our amazing copy editors!

Elias Hanson is a sophomore Environmental Studies major who works as a copy editor for the St. Olaf Messenger. They enjoy working for the Mess due to their desire to keep up to date with campus news in advance, and an enjoyment of going over spelling mistakes in red pen.

Riley is a sophomore Creative Writing and Environmental Studies double major from Minnesota. She enjoys working for the Messenger because she loves supporting student journalism and student expression!

Callista is a sophomore SOAN major and environmental studies concentrator. Her favorite part about copy editing for the Mess is getting to read and support everyone’s awesome work each week!

Ashlyn Wuench is a sophomore environmental studies major from Springfield, Missouri. She is a big fan of working with the other lovely copyeditors and openly geeking over grammar with them, as well as getting a sneak peek into the soon-to-be published stories for each issue. This is her second year as a copyeditor, and she has adored how welcoming the Messenger staff have been towards her since she was a wee tot of a freshman

The slogan is emblazoned on signage off the highways leading into Northfield: “City of Cows, Colleges, and Contentment.” Within 20 years of the city’s own founding, two colleges — then only three blocks from one another — had cropped up along the banks of the Cannon. Even before Jesse James and his gang tried to rob the First National Bank, the burgeoning institutions that would become Carleton and St. Olaf Colleges were educating the young city of Northfield.

02/21/2022

St. Olaf announced that it will switch to a Green Campus COVID Alert Level beginning Tuesday, Feb. 22, in an email sent to the student body by the Campus Reopening Team on Monday, Feb. 21. Students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors will no longer be required to wear masks in indoor or outdoor spaces, although mask wearing will still be required when using College transportation.

The move comes after the College reported a test positivity rate of 0.62 percent during last week’s round of testing, with 17 positive tests out of 2,739 tests conducted. This marks a continued decline in positive test results from baseline testing earlier in the semester, dropping from an initial 1.87 percent to 1.84 percent during the second week of testing to the new 0.62 percent during the most recent round of test results.

Teachers, coaches and other instructors will have discretion over requiring masks in classroom, sport and music rehearsal settings, and individuals can ask others to mask when entering their individual work spaces, according to the email from Campus Reopening Lead Enoch Blazis.

“We recognize that these changes will be welcomed by some in our community but may cause concern for others,” Blazis wrote in the email. “Adjusting — and then readjusting — our behaviors and expectations has been one of the most challenging parts of this pandemic. We are moving to a Green Campus Alert Level after consulting with our epidemiologist, and we will continue to closely monitor the situation on and off campus so that we can adjust accordingly.”

What do you like about working for the Mess?

"The mess is special to me because it's an opportunity to work on a team where we all strive for a common goal. So much work on this campus is private and lonely—getting to go into the office and work with other people in such a kind, welcoming, and collaborative community is a unique treat."

What do you like about working for the Mess?

“Working on the Mess has been a great way to practice writing, get involved in student journalism, and contribute to campus culture on the Hill. I'm lucky to have such great coworkers at the Mess and would recommend going to any students interested in journalism or writing.”
