Trump’s appeal to young men in the 2024 election created a powerful narrative that resonated deeply with male voters, especially those feeling sidelined, making him the perfect “man’s candidate.”

The Man Card: 50 Years of Gender, Power & the American Presidency sheds light on how gender dynamics, identity politics, and media narratives have played a critical role in the success of Trump in the 2024 election. Hear more from Jackson Katz in this NPR segment from yesterday and learn more about The Man Card here: www.themancardmovie.com

Vice President Harris focused her campaign on women’s reproductive freedoms, and President-elect Donald Trump focused on turning out men to vote. NPR speaks with two experts.

is almost here! If you're looking for resources to to start relevant conversations in your community, we encourage you to screen the groundbreaking documentary More Than a Word, directed by John and Kenn Little.

More Than a Word traces the destructive, real-world impact of racist cultural stereotypes, and pays tribute to the ongoing Native American-led struggle to eliminate indigenous team names and mascots from U.S. sports culture. With eye-opening commentary from Native American scholars and activists, More Than a Word serves as a necessary reminder that words, images, and struggles over meaning have the power to shape history.

For a lot of educators, NFL football might seem like the last thing worth spending time analyzing and discussing in the classroom.

But for acclaimed The Nation Magazine writer Dave Zirin, the co-producer and host of our bestselling film Behind the Shield: The Power & Politics of the NFL, the National Football League’s astonishing TV ratings dominance has given it cultural, and even political, power and influence that extend far beyond sports in ways we ignore at our own peril.

“The National Football League is the closest thing we have to a national language and a national religion,” Zirin says at the start of Behind the Shield. “And the fact is, more than any other major American sport, the league has explicitly built its brand on a whole complex of images and messages that have helped shape everything from dominant ideas about patriotism, militarism, and war, to gender norms and our conception of American manhood, to the politics of race, to the meaning of corporate power in U.S. society."

If you’re looking for a classroom tool to inspire critical thinking and dialogue about our current political and cultural moment, don’t miss Zirin’s fascinating, fast-paced analysis in Behind the Shield. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4gFFAbc

Author and Nation magazine sports editor Dave Zirin tackles the myth that the NFL was somehow free of politics before Colin Kaepernick and other Black NFL players took a knee.

When Kamala Harris squared off against Donald Trump on the presidential debate stage the other week, she wasn’t just taking on a man who has built his political career on amped-up displays of hypermasculine aggression and bravado.

As only the second woman ever to win her party’s nomination, she was also up against nearly 250 years of history in which presidential leadership, and the office of the presidency itself, have come to be linked in the American imagination with traditional ideas about manhood and masculinity.

If you’re interested in taking a closer look at these dynamics, don’t miss our new film The Man Card: 50 Years of Gender, Power & the American Presidency, a fully revised update of our 2020 film of the same title. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3B8Mm9c
