A Johns Hopkins University study looked at how different closures during the lockdown reduced Covid deaths.
The study found that overall, the lockdowns, defined in the study as “any government mandate that directly restricts peoples’ possibilities” reduced Covid deaths by .2%. The greatest impact due to closures was business closures which reduced Covid deaths by 10.6%.

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement yesterday. The 83-year-old’s decision to step down, gives President Joe Biden his first opportunity to make a Supreme Court nomination and fulfill a campaign promise: to make history.

As Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho nears the end of his tenure, the board last night selected his successor.
Of 16 preliminary applicants, three candidates – Dr. Jose Dotres, Rafaela Espinal and Jacob Oliva – were interviewed in person for the position. Later, the board voted 6 to 3 to appoint Dotres as Carvalho’s replacement.

Florida COVID-19 cases are declining. The state is one of 14 that have seen at least a 10% decrease from last week’s cases. The other states where numbers are declining are California, Colorado, Illinois, Georgia, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware. On the other hand, 26 states have experienced at least a 10 percent increase in cases.

Two tornadoes struck the southwest Florida area and destroyed dozens of homes in Lee County on Sunday. Some residents were displaced from their home in a trailer park and others from the surrounding area.
The tornadoes were produced by the same system that brought icy weather conditions further north. At a news conference on Sunday, Cecil Pendergrass, co-chairman of the Lee county board of commissioners,said that 60 and more homes are currently “unlivable”.
