UPDATE... On the winter system expected late Sunday, Sunday night and Monday. System is trending a little further north. Snow will develop across western and central South Dakota during the day Sunday, moving to Sioux Falls by late afternoon / early evening and then across southern Minnesota Sunday evening and night. As of now it looks like the heaviest snow will be along in north of US highway 14 where 2 to 4 inches will be possible. Sioux Falls will likely end up with less than an inch with this system, Mankato will likely be around an inch depending on how far north the system ends up. Stay tuned, more updates to come as the system develops.

Below is a little recap of what the weather was like in January. Just to be clear, the temperatures for the last 14 days are from Mankato, but generally, temperatures were in the same range throughout our viewing area for the month.

January was an extremely dry month with basically all of us not even getting an inch of snow, let alone a half inch of snow for totals for the entire month. The last widespread measurable snowfall through the area was back on December 19th. The month of February does look like it will try and become a more active weather pattern, but we will have to wait and see if any of these storm system's track over the area.

I guess you could say the biggest story of the month was how we ended it with 6 straight days of temperatures well above average. During these last 6 days of the month, we had high temperatures 15-35 degrees above average. This included many spots breaking record high temperatures yesterday, as well as on Tuesday. We also ended with a lot of sunny days to go with those warmer temperatures. What a difference after the Arctic Blast of cold air we just had before this warmer air moved in. Despite this warm stretch we have had, we did still have a very cold start through the first 3 and a half weeks of January and ended up with 23 days of below freezing high temperatures. Again, these are Mankato numbers for temperatures, but for the most part we were all in the same ballpark. We will wait to see what February brings us after what has been a very quiet winter thus far.

Last Friday, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that the House DFL’s efforts to deny the chamber a quorum have been valid.

The Minnesota House continues to stand divided. The chamber will enter its fourth week next Tuesday, but an ongoing DFL protest means the party still hasn’t been on the House floor.

We have ended January with springlike weather that included some areas setting record high temperatures yesterday, and this past Tuesday. Today, it was another sunny day with temperatures in the 40s. This is still a good 20 degrees above average for this time of year.

The first weekend of February we will continue above average temperatures, but with less sun compared to the sunny days we had this week. After this weekend, winter temperatures return with highs near 20, and lows near 10 for the first full week of February.

Tomorrow, the biggest story will be the wind. A low-pressure system will be near us to the west and will eventually move to the northeast through central/northern Minnesota. We could see a few flurries in the morning, and some drizzle in the afternoon as temperatures get above freezing. However, it will not be anything that will create a lot of precipitation for us. The winds will the bigger deal as we will have gusts tomorrow out of the southeast from 30-40mph+. Highs will be around 40 with lows around 30 Saturday night.

Sunday will be the last day with well above average temperatures in the lows 40s. It will be partly cloudy day with a weaker wind out of the southwest. Sunday night, a strong cold front sweeps through and we could see some snow into Monday morning. This is still uncertain, but what is certain is that temperatures will fall into the teens Sunday night. From there temperatures stay colder at around/ below average for all of next week.
