Gear prep for a location orchestral recording this weekend!

I love a good challenge. Picking out the needed gear, making sure I have a backup plan if “plan A” won’t work, and working with the ensemble to get the best results we can with the gear and space at hand.

I knew this day would come eventually, but this hurts a ton. Ajax passed away on Saturday evening. He went into our bedroom to take a nap in one of his usual spots, after a while Emily went to find him and found him lying there. For what we can tell, it was peaceful in his sleep. It’s been an extremely hard start to the week for us, and Emily has been such amazing support for me.

This dude was the best cat, hands down. He was always down for a cozy nap with his people, ready to get belly rubs, happy to re-watch The Office, and would do anything to get some salmon treats. He was so loved and reciprocated the same love right back to us. (I was his favorite, but Emily still got Sunday snuggles while I was at work)

About 4 years ago, after he ate a big chunk of a ribbon, he was diagnosed with fairly advanced and sudden heart disease and given about 6 months to live, but made it 8x as long (by way of countless vet ER trips, checkups, and pills 3 times daily). I can’t thank Dr. Murphy and Hollie at MVES enough for all the care they gave him in that time. He pushed so much further than anyone expected to keep giving us his love, but it still doesn’t feel like close to enough time.

We always said “there’s a lot of snuggles in that bod” about him. I guess we got every last one he had. Love and miss you so much, Bro

With my studio not having a dedicated tracking space anymore, I’ve been thinking this rack needs to get set to go mobile. Who’s got a live album idea that needs some insane gear to show up and record? Perhaps your jazz combo needs a vibey live album from a speakeasy? Let’s make it happen!

Just found out that one of the first guys to give me a shot at studio work professionally, Chuck Chapman, owner of Chapman Recording & Mastering, has passed away. He was so supportive and gave so much time to help me learn how a major studio works. Anyone who ran a studio as a career for over 40 years has seen a LOT and has a ton of wisdom on how to handle whatever life throws at them. So many stories. Always makes me happy to think back when I work with gear I got from him. He’ll be missed.

10 years of recording between photos, and a ton has changed! I still have the little Shure mixer, but that’s about it. Crazy to look back on the last decade!

The less exciting part of the studio is due for some updates/upgrades very soon! Larger backup drive being added, new hard drive setup being prepped, all for a new computer to replace the good old Mac Pro!

🤩 Love the wrap on this vintage kit! These are all 60’s drums, and I have another kick from the 50’s. Old Gretsch is just a cheat code for recording. They just sound like the drums on your favorite records…because odds are it was a similar kit.
