More people are seeking housing at shelters on the Peninsula amid the cold weather, leaders say.

“We’re seeing, roughly about 28 families that have had to come in, which is almost double. We’re seeing more and more veterans than we’ve had in the past,” said Liz Parker with LINK of Hampton Roads.

Shelters on the Peninsula are experiencing a surge in unsheltered people seeking assistance as temperatures drop throughout the region.

A police chase that started on I-464 ended with the driver crashing into a building on Friday, state police say.

When Austin Edwards from Virginia Beach got off I-464 onto Freeman Avenue, he reached a dead end and lost control of his car due to ice, police say. He then drove the car off the road and hit a building.

Richard Humbert, the man convicted of killing 8-year-old Forrest Hooper in a hit-and-run on South Battlefield Boulevard, will serve five years in prison. His sentencing comes after a jury found him guilty back in November of 2024.
