Griffin, Ga.

John wanted to build a dresser for his wife’s sewing room. Since she is a big Harry Potter fan, he scoured the internet for Harry Potter–themed dresser ideas and found that people had taken chests of drawers and painted them to look like stacked suitcases. That gave him the idea of building stacked boxes of various sizes that look like suitcases but open from the front. The cart is an integral part of the dresser and is on locking casters.

JessEm Stainless Steel Precision Rules and Squares

Whether you are laying out joinery with a marking knife, or penciling a design on paper, squares and rules sometimes shift off the mark. These innovative models from JessEm solve that problem with flexible, abrasive tabs that prevent shifting. I found them very effective in my tests, on both paper and hardwood.

Reid Eric Anderson
Kihei, Hawaii

Reid made 18 of these Greene and Greene Robinson chairs as his first run of chairs. Before starting construction, he traveled to Pasadena, Calif., to tour the Gamble House. While there, he also visited the Huntington Museum, where he studied photos and drawings of Greene and Greene’s work.

Joshua Sterns
Fort Bragg, Calif.

This table is from Joshua’s time at the Krenov School, and Joshua believes it incorporates a few more techniques than are strictly practical timewise, such as veneering, bent lamination, tambours, bird’s-mouth miters, and sliding dovetails. The madrone he used for the drawer fronts, tambours, and end panels contained beautiful red streaks, allowing for gradations of color that add depth and interest.

Michael Fucile
Palm Harbor, Fla.

This nightstand, one of a pair, matches a bed Michael built several years before. Instead of cutting off the sapwood on the air-dried walnut top, he decided to highlight it by book-matching it and making it a focal point of the piece, along with the continuous-grain drawer fronts.

Joe Martin
Fort Stockton, Tex.

Inspired by his love of Shaker furniture and its deep history, Joe built this candlestick table. He entered the piece in the 2022 annual Texas Furniture Makers Show in Kerrville, Tex., where it won the Society of Period Furniture Makers award. It is a reproduction of a table at the Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, Mass.

Review: Trusty-Cook Standard Dead-Blow Hammers

Every woodworking shop needs a dead-blow hammer or two, and these mallets from Trusty-Cook are among the best. Made in Indiana, and recently added to the Lee Valley catalog, they are made of nonmarring polyurethane, hot-cast around lead shot and a steel handle. This gives them a very solid feel and excellent impact. They come in a wide variety of sizes, but I like the 21-oz. ($26) and 26-oz. ($29) best for woodworking use.

When crosscutting with a handsaw, you can use the reflection on the saw plate to gauge your accuracy. A saw that is pivoted off 90° (but square vertically) will show a bend in the workpiece that looks like the refraction that occurs in water. Change the angle of the saw to straighten the reflection and you’ll get a 90° cut. I use this phenomenon to help me make square cuts without marking a line. If you do use a layout line to guide your saw, the reflection will tell you if the saw is square vertically. - Erik Richter

Frank Eastman
Dallas, Tex.

Frank designed and built this clock as a housewarming gift. He researched antique grandfather clocks and took some design features from them. But wanting it to be whimsical, he incorporated the children’s nursery rhyme “Hickory Dickory Dock” and called the piece “Hickory Dickory Clock.” Instead of the usual pendulum and weights, this clock has a battery movement, allowing the entire inside of the clock to be used for storage.

Steven Owens
Denville, N.J.

Steven made this cabinet for his daughter who, after graduating with a BFA, has become an accomplished seamstress. Inside, it has adjustable shelves to hold different-size spools of thread, with a slot to store a bobbin of the same color thread just in front of the spool. The zipper’s slider is used as a pull to open the door. The cabinet mounts on the wall with a French cleat.
