Amesbury names a new Poet Laureate! πŸ“– πŸͺΆ

After a months-long search, the Poet Laureate Support Committee has elected Lisa Usani Phillips as Amesbury's fourth Poet Laureate, to serve a two-year term as our city's poetic ambassador and champion.

About Lisa:
A longtime writer and editor, Lisa edited textbooks for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Pearson before becoming an instructor and marketing communications specialist for Crafters Quarters, a local fiber-arts studio. She has worked as a senior content editor at EBSCO Information Services in Ipswich since 2011. Her debut hybrid poetry collection, Guest People, was published by Wheeling Tern Books in October 2022.

For more info on Phillips and her work, please visit her author website, lisausaniphillips.com.

This means we must say goodbye (for now) to Ellie O'Leary, Poet Laureate 2020–2023. Amesbury thanks you for all of your creativity and hard work bringing poetry to our community! Follow Ellie's continuing escapades on her website, ellieoleary.com.

LISA USANI PHILLIPS
A Reading: Guest People
I will be reading poems from my debut hybrid collection, Guest People. The title comes from the English translation of Hakka, Han people who migrated within China over centuries and formed a distinct subculture. My mom comes from a Hakka family that emigrated from Guangdong to Thailand in the 1940s. She left Bangkok in the 1960s to go to college in the US, which is where she met my dad, an American of Dutch, English, German, and Irish descent. The collection, which Carolyn Oliver describes as β€œboth an ache and a balm,” reflects a persistent, intergenerational sense of otherness, border crossings, and a longing for home.
