The Essex Plaza was included in The Lincoln Park Historic District listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The “Historic Essex Plaza Lobby Mural” should effuse the rich historical spirit of the community, of the building itself, its occupants and resilient spirits of the City of Newark. Inspiration can be drawn from the past, present or future vision of Essex Plaza which fits seamlessly within the Lincoln Park neighborhood being an arts district. There is a $7,500 muralist stipend award (does not include materials).
