ACCUMULATING SNOW TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY NIGHT. CREDIT::: Ohio Weather Network

An arctic cold front will move in tonight, brining heavy bands of snow and gusty winds tonight through Thursday Night.

Lake effect snow warnings are in effect until 4 AM Friday for Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Lake, Geauga, Summit, and Portage Counties. Snow accumulation in the warning area will be in the 8-12 inches, with amounts in some areas around the 12-18 inch range.

A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect until 4 AM Friday for Lorain, Mahoning, and Medina Counties. Lake effect snow amounts will likely reach the 2-6 inch range tonight through Thursday night .

Snow amounts for the rest of the area will be from a dusting to 2 inches.

Wind gusts potentially reaching 40-50 mph, visibilities will be lowered to 1/4 of a mile or less due to some blowing or drifting snow. Roads will be slick as well. With those gusty winds. Wind chills may reach 0 degrees to 15 degrees due to the combination of gusty winds and cold temperatures. Make sure to bundle up heading into tonight and Thursday.

Here we SNOW again! At least for some of us...

Gusty winds will develop overnight tonight and continue to build Wednesday. Gusts over 30 are likely with up to 40 or 45mph possible in spots into Thursday behind an arctic cold front.

Wednesday will actually be the warmest day of this week with highs above freezing in most locations. In fact, highs in the 40s are likely across southern Ohio. THE PROBLEM? Gusty winds will still make it feel quite chilly.

SPEAKING OF COLD - the ARCTIC FRONT blasts through Wednesday night with a frigid Thursday expected. The front will cause rain and snow showers to develop as it moves in with temperatures above freezing. But precipitation will quickly change to snow showers or snow squalls once the front moves by. WIND CHILLS WILL BE AROUND ZERO by daybreak Thursday!

LAKE EFFECT SNOW will then get underway. Heavy snow showers are once again likely to pile up the snow in the Snow Belt of northeast Ohio. Amounts could top 6 to 10 inches in the primary belt with 3 to 8 inches possible in the secondary belts.

LAKE MICHIGAN KICKS IN with snow bands that could make it all the way into central Ohio by Thursday afternoon according to some of the modeling. No - there won't be the significant accumulation this far away from the lake. But with the bitter cold air, there could be some fluffy couple of inches in spots if that band materializes like the models suggest Thursday afternoon!

SNOW SQUALLS POSSIBLE - With the intense wind gusts on Thursday, any heavy snow showers could create brief - near white-out conditions! Please be careful traveling Thursday where any of these snow showers occur!

Our next winter weather is starting Wednesday night thru Thursday!!!

We are watching our next weather system that will bring cold temperatures, windy conditions, and accumulating snow.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect into portions of northeast Ohio from Wednesday afternoon through late Thursday night. Heavy lake effect snow remains a concern, with amounts ranging from 6-12 inches possible. Lower totals heading south and west.

Elsewhere, snow amounts will be a dusting to 2 inches possible. Gusty winds may result in some blowing and drifting snow, which could create for hazardous driving conditions. Gusty winds up to 35-45 mph will be possible as well...

Central and Southern, IN is your turn in the hot... er... cold seat tomorrow as another clipper system comes to spread wintery cheer to all you good boys and girls!

The further north you go the least likely to see accumulating snow you are, not including our lake effect impacted areas. They're... Special.

We expect to see anywhere from a dusting as far north as the Delphi area to 3" near Vincennes and along the Ohio River. Locally heavier amounts are possible

🦃 TRICKY THANKSGIVING SNOW: Halloween is over but don’t tell that to the turkey still playing tricks on us!

A tricky storm system moving through the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys early Thursday morning will initially bring rain to the area overnight. Models indicate that rain will quickly transition to snow as the falling precipitation drags down colder air. This could lead to a few inches of slushy, wet snow in several spots. But this isn’t an easy forecast.

Issues:

⏲️ Timing: When and how quick will this transition to snow occur. For this forecast to hold the gravy, rain needs to quickly transition to snow, or it won’t float a roll.

🌡️ Temperatures: Nobody likes cold turkey. Temperatures will be above freezing Wednesday night and into very early Thursday for most areas. As the cold air aloft gets dragged down by the rain, surface temperatures fall from the low 40s into the low to middle 30s in a short period. If the cold air can’t make it to the surface, consider this forecast mashed potatoes. Also, timing comes into play here.

⏳ Duration: The turkey needs time in the oven and the snow will need time to fall too. This fast-moving system is practically out of Ohio by mid-morning Thursday. Temperatures will also warm above freezing on Thursday. For the snow to stick around longer than just a few minutes, we’ll need the snow to fall for at least a few hours to see accumulation. Some of the initial snow will melt thanks to the wet surfaces, but snow will stick over time.

❄️ Intensity: Should the transition to snow happen quickly, how heavy will the snow fall? If we can sustain at least moderate snowfall rates for a few hours, this forecast is certainly possible. But there’s not a lot of confidence right now due to all these factors.

🗺️ If you’re traveling on Thanksgiving, use caution, especially in the morning. Roads could become slick, especially bridges and overpasses. Allow for some extra travel time as well. Just like Thanksgiving dinner, good things come with patience.

Keep whisking that gravy and we’ll keep you updated on the forecast. – Mark 11/26/2024

SNOW JUST BEFORE THANKSGIVING DAY?

We are closely monitoring a weather system that could bring some accumulating snow to the area.

A weather system will move in, with it we start to see some rain moving in Wednesday afternoon. As cold air moves in, snow will likely mix in after midnight Wednesday night, before a switch to some snow. Precipitation looks to linger into Thanksgiving Morning before tapering off.

As of now, it appears a heavier band of snow is expected to set up into portions of Ohio, bringing 1-2 inches of snow. Other areas like Youngstown, Columbus, and Cincinnati will likely remain at 1 inch or less. I will be monitoring this system very closely as it evolves and make any necessary changes.

Quick Sunday Afternoon update on Thanksgiving storm potential -

This post gets a bit into the "weather weeds" - so hang in there with me 🙂

I was hoping the models might have finally settled on the storm threats for the middle of next week, but it appears we are still just a bit too far out for that. The European modeling is holding pretty steadfast on a track that would bring rain and snow into Ohio with the potential for at least some accumulation somewhere near or north of I-70.

The American model (GFS) has waffled back and forth between having a sloppy rain/snow event for Ohio to having nothing at all.

There is still the question on if it will be cold enough for snow - or we will just get a cold rain Wednesday night into Thanksgiving morning. We've definitely seen that before!

Because of the better consistency on the European modeling, our forecast is a bit more heavily weighted on this outlook. Looking at multiple runs (ensembles) - this would give areas north of I-70 around a 50% of seeing 3" of snow or more (this model image is posted). Those chances go up 70 to 80% chance of 1" or more.

In comparison, the GFS modeling give these same areas in Ohio less than a 20% chance of seeing 1" of snow.

Either way - if you do have travel plans the middle of next week, please keep checking back!

LATEST ON THANKSGIVING STORM POTENTIAL -

Most of our modeling is now in line with a storm impacting our area late Wednesday into Thanksgiving Day.

What is unclear right now is of course the exact track - which will make a HUGE difference - as well as the amount of cold air that will be in place. Confidence is growing (although moderate at best) that there will be some accumulating snow in some part of Ohio - mostly likely north of I-70 - on Thanksgiving morning.

A track just south of the Ohio River would bring the best chance for snow to Ohio. A track north of that would take the snow to northern Ohio or even hold it up in Michigan - bringing a cold rain to the rest of us.

Of course, a track too far south would keep most of the impacts south as well. This scenario has seemed less likely now with the most recent modeling.

SO - You know the drill with these winter storm forecasts! They are tricky as there are so many variables at play - any of which could dramatically swing the forecast if the models don't handle them correctly. But because of the possible impact on so many that could be traveling for the holiday, we will continue to keep the updates coming as new information comes out. Please, stay tuned!
