Our members are art directors, designers, photo editors, editors and graphics professionals. Since drafting its charter in 1965, the SPD remains the only organization specifically addressing the visual concerns of print and online editorial professionals.The efforts of the Society and its

members also serve to educate and enlighten the public about the importance of magazines and online publications. Editorial design plays a crucial role in shaping and documenting this information and in turn, our common history.

We are excited to announce the winners of the SPD-U Show & Tell Competition! There were no rules and no formulas, we just asked for students to show us their best editorial work. For the first time ever, the competition included submissions from undergraduate and graduate students while also marking the introductory of new categories that reflect SPD’s commitment to creative excellence across multiple disciplines.

In Memoriam: Lloyd Ziff - September 27, 1942 - August 1, 2024

The Society of Publication Designers lost a great friend, mentor, and inspiration this summer, when legendary magazine designer Lloyd Ziff passed on August 1 at the age of 81. In Lloyd’s stellar career, he was responsible for the visual direction of some of the most significant magazines of his time, mentored and jump-started the careers of countless designers and photographers, had a brilliant second career as a noted photographer, and provided the SPD community with many years of leadership and friendship.

SPD remembers Lloyd with the help of several art directors who were impacted by his friendship, mentorship, and influence.

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27th, photographer Gillian Laub's powerful portraits of Holocaust survivors were projected onto buildings and structures throughout New York City including the landmark Brooklyn Bridge. For her project Live2Tell Gillian has photographed and documented the oral histories of over 200 survivors. In the return of SPD’s Big Shots speaker series, SPD Advisory Board Member and Senior Visuals Editor of Vanity Fair, Natalie Gialluca, speaks with Gillian and her creative partner on this project, Creative Director Kira Pollack about the inspiration, process and production of this extraordinary, one of a kind art exhibit.
