So, I like this for those among us who are working a "survival job" and beating themselves up when art doesn't pay all the bills. I also like it as a reminder for those who've found a career they love, but run into the problem of loving their work so much that sometimes they neglect their artist needs.
I had a show last night, and I realized halfway through the day that I created a business that allows me the freedom to not work on show days if I don't want to, but I rarely allow myself that privilege (because the little "not enough" voice in my head tells me I'm not working hard enough...). Moving forward, I commit to giving my artist the luxury of time and space on show days - no clients before 10am or after 2pm those days, and no clients before 10am the morning after, so I can rest, recover, AND fully enjoy a hard-earned burger post-show without worrying about a 6am wake-up call!!!! :)
Where else do you need to embrace your artist and give them the compassion, kindness, and space they need to flourish??
Just a reminder! 🧡✨
I've been full time freelance for about eight years now, but I had a part time job when I was starting out and I would've struggled to get started with my career without it! This comes up a lot at talks I do, and I get asked by people a lot whether they need to go fulltime freelance to become 'a *real* professional artist/writer/maker' (quick answer, no way!)
I think it's important that people feel that they're still completely valid as a professional artist or creative person if they work a few days a week to pay the bills, or they work full time doing something completely different and they create in the evenings and weekends!
Even if you're a full time artist who needs to get new a day job for a while, you haven't failed! It's ok! All the better for you, doing what you can to support yourself and your art. You're amazing, you're professional, and we're all in this together 💛
