What’s unique about Daenerys as a character is her ability to do things that leave people unsure as to whether or not her actions are morally just. Throughout the course of her story Dany has always toed the line between good and bad, often doing things that could be seen as bad but doing them for a good purpose. She’s always been a character who protects and defends the innocents, even if that same method of protection calls her morals into question. The reason why I, at least, saw her actions at King’s Landing as outlandish is because they lacked everything that made her character so interesting and unique. She could have been portrayed as “mad” in a manner that didn’t go against everything she stands for, yet they decided to take another route. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Dany lose her grips on reality if it had been done in a way that made sense for her character and didn’t contradict everything that was established in previous seasons. But having a character who has spent almost the entirety of her storyline protecting innocents no matter the cost, suddenly decide to massacre thousands of them because the sight of the Red Keep triggered her? Ridiculous. D&D justify her rampage by saying that she was overcome and decided to take things “personally”, yet if that were true would she not have flown directly to the Red Keep and burnt it to hell with Cersei inside? Cersei is the only character she can genuinely hold responsible for what has been done to her and her family, but instead of doing that she decides to massacre thousands of innocents that Cersei gives zero f***s about. Makes total sense.
