Jeff Koons on the Artist as Propagandist

09/02/2023

Artist Brice Marden has recently passed at the age of 84. Marden was one of the more important painters to have emerged in the last 20th century. In 1983, ART/new york interviewed him for our tape on Geometric Abstraction, where he talks about numerology and our emotional response to patterns. In light of his passing, we have decided to make available our full 1983 segment on his work. RIP Brice.

This interview is part of GEOMETRIC ABSTRACTION - ART/new york No. 17. The full program also includes an interview with Al Held, and footage of exhibitions by Al Held at the Andre Emmeric Gallery and Sol Lewitt at the John Weber and Barbara Toll Galleries.

CHUCK CLOSE: Eye to Eye - ART/new york No. 48 is now available for streaming on Vimeo On Demand at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/chuckclose

On this program we look at the extraordinary career of Chuck Close, an artist who, for thirty years, has had a passionate interest in making portraits of his friends and family. Working from photographs, Close has made an astonishing body of work. Using a multiplicity of innovative styles and techniques, he has revolutionized the time honored portrait. Included are interviews with fellow artists Janet Fish, April Gornik and Kent Floeter as well as critic/curator Klaus Kertess who talk about the experience of “sitting” for a Chuck Close portrait.

ART/new york has followed Chuck’s work for many years and this program includes two recent exhibitions at the Pace/Wildenstein Gallery in SoHo. Additionally, we visit Close in his downtown studio where he demonstrates his painting method and discusses his artistic choices. Also included are interviews with art critic and poet John Yau, curator Klaus Kertess and Museum of Modern Art curator, Robert Storr, the organizer of the 1998 Close retrospective at MoMA.

APRIL GORNIK: Landscapes - ART/new york No. 62 is now available for streaming on Vimeo On Demand at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/aprilgornik

April Gornik paints evocative landscapes with roots in minimalism as well as the conceptual avant garde of the 70’s. Her haunted imagery is based on photographs that she manipulates to make highly personal work filled with sensual, sexual and metaphorical overtones. Gornik’s intuitive relationship to nature offers a fresh look at the landscape that seems ever threatened, distant and disappearing. Seen on this program are two exhibitions at the Edward Thorpe Gallery in New York and a mid-career retrospective at the Neuberger Museum. Interviews are with critic/art historian Donald Kuspit, art dealer Renato Danese, curator Dede Young and April Gornik in her New York City studio.
