As couture week unfolds in Paris, it is inspiring to see iconic looks developed through the play of novelty trims. Trims were initially born out of a practical necessity to keep the fabric intact by not unraveling. Trims have transformed from simple, functional elements to works of intricate beauty. It’s remarkable how something so seemingly mundane can capture the beauty of human creativity.

Join us as we explore how these decorative details have evolved from simple necessity to standout novelties, from elaborate collars to ornamental embellishments to chest pieces. Subscribe to our Jan newsletter on Novelty trims out of tomorrow. Link in bio to subscribe.

Join our Dec Newsletter, as we explore the fascinating world of French passementeries—both antique and new—and uncover the histories and memories they carry within.

Often a made from braided cords, beads, or intricate fabric details, passementeries encompass much more than embellishments—they’re loaded with history and cultural significance.

One gem in our archive is a rare vintage passementeries book filled with intricate trims once owned by a French artisan. In our newsletter coming out tomorrow, we invite you to connect with us for an exclusive, in-person glimpse.

Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year.

Did you know that when the British arrived in India in the 17th century, they knew little about cotton as linen or wool were the primary materials used for their dressing, and the British merely utilized cotton for candle wicks.

At that time, cotton was a subsistence crop in India. There was no electricity, chemicals, or greed involved in cotton farming. Instead, there was craftsmanship, nature, and camaraderie in the cotton supply chain. The journey from a subsistence to a cash crop (a crop grown for cash) entailed after colonial greed overtook the Indian cotton supply chain.

Did you know the cotton seeds in North America were brought by the French settlers arriving from the Western Indies? The land wrested from Native Americans and cleared of its virgin forests was fertile. Slave labor was cheap, and cotton began to be produced commercially for the first time, grown and picked by enslaved men, women, and children. In 1859, as many as sixty thousand enslaved people produced 66 million pounds of cotton.

History provides facts to put into context the unfair stereotyping of now-developing countries that are also old civilizations. Our founder spoke to Chris Marrow, the Audio Head at Brad Pitt’s Production company, Plan B, about the noteworthy stories related to the history of cotton in India. The podcast will be released on Audible in 2025.

Our October Newsletter was delivered last Sunday! It covers the stories of traditional adornments—breastplates, anklets, bindis, and nose and toe rings—as symbols of beauty, endurance, and the divine feminine. We all look at the pieces in awe, but few know their history and scientific relevance.

We can’t help but wonder if Daniel Roseberry knew the background of the Bhuta ritual when he created the breastplate at Schiaparelli, if Ricardo Tisci was aware of the significance of a nose ring when he did Givenchy couture, or when Karl did anklets at Chanel. This reminds us that fashion truly has deep roots in ancient cultures. Fashion is a tapestry of history, a timeless blend of cultural heritage and modern expression.

For our May newsletter, we started a four-part newsletter series, “Threads of Gold,” sharing our research on the influence of gold in fashion, particularly the contributions of India’s golden threads that connect historical narratives like that of the courtesans of India with the contemporary global couture events like the MET Gala or Cannes red carpet.

The June newsletter is out tomorrow and discusses the coming together of the Italian craft of Pietra dura with the Panchin Kari on the walls of the Taj Mahal and how this craftsmanship is replicated in textiles and fine needlework, inspiring intricate Zardosi embroideries that capture the essence of opulence.
