Today in Radio History:

Somebody made a recording of this station in Phoenix and all these years later we get to hear what this sounded like. Anyone remember "Party Radio 103-9"?

The station wasn’t around very long – 1997-2000, but it did make it’s mark on the Phoenix market.

Today in Radio History, Part 2:

Since in Part 1, we talked about MG Kelly and referenced KCBQ, I found a pristine recording in our archives from today in 1977. Some might not remember Gerry Peterson, but Mason Dixon is familiar to not only those in San Diego, but New Haven, CT where Dixon was well known on WAVZ.

Courtesy of BigAppleAirchecks. Nearly perfect audio quality on this one. On this aircheck, you’ll hear Gerry Peterson, then Mason Dixon on a very music-intensive KCBQ. Now, KCBQ and KGB had a…

Today in Radio History:

As the description says, this is from a small window of time from after the end of KODJ, until KCBS-FM dropped the Oldies format entirely.

MG "Machine Gun" Kelly is a national syndicated radio host, who is best known for his long running career as a DJ based in Los Angeles. Some of his best work is featured on Airchexx, on such stations as 64 KFI, KCBS-FM, 93 KHJ and even KCBQ San Diego!

Start with this aircheck, then listen to the entire MG Kelly collection, and hear why he is one of the very best jocks of all time!

Its always great to hear the gunner, and this is no exception… but why does your webmaster detect a hint of Dan Ingram sarcasm in Kelly’s delivery? Were it not for this exceptionally or…

My dear wife tells me that internet friends are just fake friends, that immediate FAMILY and REAL people are my friends.

I consider these guys family. Yeah, they're radio broadcasting friends, and they're internet friends... but they are my family. Glad we all got together last weekend!

Not to beat a subject to death, but the audio here was recorded here at the Airchexx Radio Ranch. The final two and a half hours of WCBS 880, including that final 20 minutes and the sign-off forever of this iconic station.

I'll have more coming soon.

Hi Everyone!

I just attended the nicest assembly of radio professionals here in the northeast. Coupled with the emotional loss of WCBC 880 and getting to see friends whom I care deeply for, it was a great day.

Moving forward, there are a few things to announce. First off, effective sometime this evening, the HitOldies internet station is going off the web indefinitely. With electric rates increasing every month at a rate that's impossible to keep up with, I can't have my production computer running 24/7. At least for now. I'll revisit this in October after I move - which is the second reason. My wife and I are moving into our first home. The closing is in 7-10 days. More details on that coming soon.

WCBS 880 - The format change is in a few hours as of this writing. Not only will I have audio from that, but all the audio recorded from the past 10 days from me, Matt Craig and many others who have dedicated their recorders to recording the final days of the greatest news station on the East Coast, if not the planet... with that, and the historical recordings that Don Swaim has given me access to, I'll be putting together the greatest historical retrospective of this great station that anyone could wish for. That is going to open up a new section on airchexx.com dedicated to News/Talk and information (spoken word) broadcasting. We are truly going to become the warehouse of over-the-air radio recordings. Anyone who reads this, if you have any recordings from any time period of WCBS 880 (and after that, 1010 WINS, KYW 1060, KFWB, KCBS, WBBM, WBZ and any of the many other All-News stations around the country), please contact me at the following email addresses:

[email protected]

The reason for the many emails is, over the years, the top two have been filled with spam and things get lost. That final one is reserved for Amateur Radio stuff, but you can send to there if you don't hear back from me.

The timeframe for completion of this project is between October 15 and October 30, 2024. WCBS 880 will live on in the hearts of the Tri-State region as long as those of us who remember point their memories to airchexx.com and a couple of other aircheck collectors who have stuff relating to NYC.

God bless all of you and I hope to hear from you all very soon.

Top 40 radio. What a mess. If you’re going to play in the top 40 game, then there’s only one way to get your station heard you have to use tried and true methods first off. Let’s talk about your programming. You need to play. Only the top hits in rapid rotation play those Taylor Swift records play them play the top 30 have a couple of big monster hits recurrence don’t play anything that’s more than a year old. Unless it was so huge with the kids that they’ll listen do some dead segues and take some of that imaging out because it’s interrupting their listening experience and then put some jocks on the air, not just jock not top 40 the way we heard it. You put people on the air, like the kids today talk you hire somebody that knows how the kids talk from their John from their age group. Let’s talk about promotion. How do you discover the FM band? There’s billboards hats, bumper, stickers, coffee, cups swag people go back to the old ways that were tried and true, and then You have to talk about swag. I’m talking about bumper stickers, coffee, cups T-shirts, billboards have your station have the station call letters and the frequency and and the web address right there in their face you have to have an app where they go and scroll through five different or 50 other stations to find yours they have to press one button, that’s it. If you don’t do these things you are not gonna captivate the market and you’re not going to do it you your station has to become so popular advertisers notice or you’re not gonna make any money. That’s how you do top 40. In a nutshell, nothing else works And most of the listeners 35 and younger are listening online so make sure that Web stream is a one button push on their device but you also throw in there your station frequency do not lose listeners because you inconvenience them that’s it

Good morning radio friends. Although it’s a whole season away, I’m in the planning stages for our next radio recreation special, the WNBC Time Machine Weekend. It’s going to happen on my internet station, online at HitOldies.net, Labor Day Weekend.

While I’ve had the great pleasure and honor of getting some of the original WNBC people, such as Allen Beebe, Dale Parsons, Frank Cipola and some others, two WNBC legends have eluded me- Dan Taylor and Howard Stern. Taylor went into retirement (as far as I know) after leaving WCBS-FM, and Stern- Well, you know. He’s still a legend in satellite radio.

Does anyone know of how I might get in touch with those two awesome gentlemen, or do any of you know of someone who was on WNBC in the late 70s and the 80s until WNBC became WFAN?

Anyone who can help me in contacting these people, their help would be GREATLY appreciated! And if you do, I’ll credit you with helping me out on the HitOldies website and on the air.

If you’re not familiar with the WNBC Time Machine, here’s a great aircheck courtesy of Airchexx.com and contributor (and personal friend Bob Gilmore). We recreate this sound each time we perform this recreation.

Wonder if we get any listeners? The first time we did this, Memorial Day weekend 2021, we had well over 10,000 listeners. I pulled the data from my streaming server.
It’s truly the radio event of the year!

Happy Sunday! I’ve got another super HD quality AM Stereo recording for you - Joel Sebastian on Stereo 66 WNBC New York and a bit of the overnight Wolfman Jack show. I haven’t had time to produce the YouTube video for it yet, so audio is all we have. But, because it sounds SO GOOD, I posted it in both Scoped and unscoped versions. That way if you just want to enjoy this slice of radio heaven you can stream it for 45 minutes while you drive or whatever.

Enjoy!

From the late Gary Blau collection provided by Lee Chambers, this 45 minute aircheck in AM Stereo is sure to please everyone who appreciated the state of Top 40 radio in the mid 1980s! This airchec…

Hey Russ Horton- do you remember Dan Williamson? Here’s a full broadcast day (minus an overnight shift, scoped down to 30 minutes of CFTR goodness!! This is just part one.

If you have memories of this great radio station please comment on the aircheck on the website. Let’s remember when Top 40 radio was KING on AM, and radio was done right!
