Imagine a chair, not of comfort, but of pure anguish. Hundreds of sharp spikes adorned its surface, ready to pierce flesh at the slightest pressure. But the horror didn’t end there. Beneath the seat, a blazing stove, transforming this already nightmarish contraption into a veritable hell of suffering.
Among the many victims of this brutal device, one name echoes through time: Jean Calas. A Protestant in 18th-century Catholic France, Calas found himself falsely accused of murdering his own son. Despite his unwavering claims of innocence, he was subjected to the Iron Chair’s merciless embrace.

Hellenistic style Roman fresco from the Villa of Arianna in Stabiae, Italy, near Pompeii (Stabiae was also destroyed by the Mount Vesuvius volcanic eruption in 79 AD/CE), 15-45 AD/CE. Naples National Archeological Museum.
Flora is the Roman goddess of flowers, spring, and gardens. She is associated with the fertility of the land and the coming of spring, and is often depicted holding a bouquet of flowers or cornucopia (like in the fresco).

Researchers are preserving the Orion Mosaic, dating to the late 2nd or early 1st century BC, in Pompeii’s House of Orion, which remains remarkably intact after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.
The mosaic illustrates the myth of Orion’s transformation into a constellation. In one version, Orion, son of Poseidon, was gifted with the ability to walk on water. After saving an island from a deadly beast, he boasted he could kill every animal on Earth. Angered by this, Gaia, the earth goddess, sent a scorpion that fatally stung him.
Another version involves Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, who was either offended by Orion’s actions or tricked into killing him. In both accounts, Orion was placed among the stars—forever set opposite Scorpio in the sky, symbolizing their eternal separation.
