very excited to launch our new book "Ayonha" with copyshop resident Tasneem Sarkez ! Get it while its hot at NYABF this weekend at table H25!!

Titled after the Libyan singer, Hamid Al-Shaeri’s song “Ayonha”, released in 1983. Ayonha in English translates to “her eyes”. This book is a collection of drawings and collages of objects, memorabilia, and imagery, all from the perspective of Sarkez’s lived experience. Representing a part of herself often unseen, to a position of loving. Prompting one to consider their own path to conceptualizing identity as it pertains to ideas and gestures of home, truth, tradition, and visibility.

Sarkez’s work considers ways of entrapment, displayment, and admiration of her heritage. Rooted in a process of reclamation in the act of remembering, translational abstraction, unraveling the archive, and reconnecting with tradition, the tension between visibility and invisibility as a Brown person is explored. Gestures of honor and memorialization are used to heal an identity often denied a moment of value, or sense of truth to their existence as a racialized “other”. Working across various forms of media, Sarkez refuses and retraces time as truth unveils itself about what it means to conceptualize the self.

very excited to announce our new publication with our copyshop resident and artist Drake Reed "Mapping Systems" Come get it at our table H25 at this weekend!!!

Description from the artist:
We were inspired to create this zine after the 2020 George Floyd Protest. When we were in the streets we grew hyper-aware of all the new ways the state was surveilling us. Throughout history resistance movements have always had to fight against surveillance constructs. We are seeing those constructs evolve faster than ever for example in the form of biometrics, predictive policing, and noise-detecting camera systems. Surveillance technology is discreetly being used on all forms of communication like iPhones, Siri, Alexa, Ringer doorbells, Tik Tok, and Instagram. They are designed to capture our attention and hook us into a perpetual cycle feeding off our personal data. We must look to resistance leaders from our history who practice subverting surveillance. This zine is an attempt for us all to think about ways we can confront surveillance in our everyday life and share resistance movements. This zine is for BIPOC young adults who are at the forefront of surveillance technology.

Drake Reed is an urban designer and artist who uses research and data analysis to fight against police surveillance and build practices of counter-surveillance. In Reed's current work, he maps movements of resistance against state-sponsored surveillance using both qualitative data and data visualization. Reed uses this mapping to develop ways for marginalized communities to evade predictive policing technology such as PredPol and Dataminr.
