Poetries of verve, witness, and humor (poetry that “helps us live our lives,” as Stevens said) are not easily found in a landscape of post-language or post-lyric poetics driven by conceptual rhetoric or internet-derived memes. The commodification of poetic and discursive language, subsumed by free market ideology (accumulative, tech-derived, without meaning or formal limitation), turning aesthetic

forms not marked by communicative intent into vehicles for easy transmission and consumption. If we as poets believe in the power of linguistic rhetoric, for good or ill, then we have a duty to engage with political and social injustices through verse. Matter is a monthly publication of such political poetry and comment.
