After one year in operation, the migrant shelter at Floyd Bennett Field is set to close early next year due to shrinking asylum seeker numbers, City Hall officials announced earlier today.

Since November 2023, the Floyd Bennett Field migrant shelter has become home to approximately 2000 migrants. After some local advocacy and a promise from Capt. Carol Hamilton to increase police presence along the popular commercial strip, the NYPD 100th Precinct announced that two police officers from the precinct will now patrol Beach 116th Street as their new assignment.

Officer Nicholas Comunale and Officer Connor Moller started their new assignment earlier this week, just four months after both officers first joined the 100th Precinct from the latest NYPD academy class.

Sandee was everywhere, knew everyone, and was always available, attending meetings and events of all kinds across the peninsula. She was a vocal supporter of getting the ferry back and standing up for Rockaway at every turn.

Sandee passed away on Nov. 11, after spending a few weeks in the hospital. She had worked with Addabbo for over 20 years, and during that time, did a remarkable job representing the state senator, according to Addabbo.

“I believe a person’s longevity has something to do with their willingness and determination to complete a task,” Addabbo told The Wave. “Truly, Sandee Doremus was willing to help others for 22 years in my office and determined to complete that task until being too ill to do so. Sandee leaves behind a legacy of assisting and caring for others, creating an amazing everlasting impression for those, like me, who were blessed to know her. Sandee’s, and her late husband Jate’s, enduring love for the Rockaway peninsula means that Heaven just received some more Rockaway sand.”

I first met Sandee Doremus when I started at the Wave in May of 2014. Back then, NYS Senator Joe Addabbo had an office in the old Wave building on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 90th Street. S... While most of Rockaway’s local incumbents soared to victory last night, one race remains “too close to call.” With an estimated 94% of votes in, Democratic incumbent NYS Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato currently leads GOP challenger Tom Sullivan by over 1000 votes in their rematch for State Assembly District 23.
