I was talking to someone today about Sonic Groove Records, Under One Sky fanzine and East Music Group, Inc., and her subsequent DJ roster.
We all came into this thing at the very oncet of Rave and Techno. It was an underground scene when underground meant not being mainstream. You had to be of a certain mindset, like a certain creed of people who all thought for themselves. We were born on the heels of the House music scene and supported being progressive and inclusive. We were a hodgepodge group of artists at heart whether we were creating art or not, THAT was what underground meant. Today underground is mistaken for simply underhanded (just pathetic).
Frankie Bones was like the Johnny Appleseed of Techno, dropping this culture called Rave all over America as well as playing a wide range of countries abroad including the Orient. Adam X had a sharp business mind that took him from record store to record label as well as DJ and Producer. Heather Heart had the vision to create the first Techno based magazine called Under One Sky which had international distribution and was like a Techno bible, publishing interviews and top 10 picks by some of the most prolific artists of our scene. That was where I came in, as a creative writer for Under One Sky, my talent was recognized and integrated into a formula that was so pioneering, stemming from all of our like minds - and East Music Group was born as a roster carrying the likes of X-Trax and Neil Landstrumm to T-1000 and Rob Gee. We supported over 50 DJs, international, national and homegrown.
ALL ARTISTS IN THE TRUEST SENSE, all creating something bigger than any one of us.
I’ve seen posts lately of certain people talking about how we have lost all focus on the creativity, the very essence of who we are, or how we represent ourselves. It is my goal here to remind you all…underground DOES NOT stand for underhanded. It does not stand for junkies and drug fueled missions. It does NOT stand for stripping your way into the scene, if that’s what you have to offer then turn it into art or just go find a pole. Underground Rave is about higher thinking, creative expression and NOT some elitist search for prostrating fans.
Bring your talents, your arts, your sincere appreciation for innovational, leading-edge exhibit. Don’t display your confidence like a demand for recognition, rather be recognized for your ability and not your aggression. Let people make you great because it is undeniable, not because you demand it. Frankly, there’s no talent in that, you are simply trying to bully your way to stardom and that’s (sorry) just laughable.
I wish you good feelings and ease of spirits, but mostly I wish you the ability to find your true artistic voice, no matter what the genus may be.
