Cardinal Robert W. McElroy of San Diego has been appointed the next archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington, following Pope Francis’ acceptance of the resignation of Cardinal Wilton D. Gregory, the first African American cardinal, the Vatican announced January 6.

Fr. Ryan Muldoon, Director of Ecumenical & Interreligious Dialogue, represented the Archdiocese of New York at an ecumenical gathering on January 2nd.

The gathering was convened for the visit of His Holiness Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and of All the East and Supreme Head of the Syriac Orthodox Church. His Holiness shared with those gathered about the current situation in Syria and the critical issues facing Christians there and in the region.

Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, a New York City native and the first American-born saint. An adult convert to the faith, she established the Sisters of Charity and pioneered Catholic education in the United States.

“She was very strong in her Anglican faith, but felt this mysterial tug to the Roman Catholic faith, at a cost of great sacrifice. She embraced that faith here in New York,” said Cardinal Timothy Dolan.
