s and to provide quality editions that have a distinct look and consistently high levels of editorial standards. The Europa catalog is eclectic, reflecting the founders’ belief that dialogue between nations and cultures is of vital importance and that this exchange is facilitated by literature chosen not only for its ability to entertain and fascinate but also to inform and enlighten. In 2013, the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association awarded Europa Editions its Paperback publication of the Year award. Europa’s New York office is directed by Editor-in-chief Michael Reynolds. Europa Editions’ London office is directed by Daniela Petracco. On this day in 1881, Gabriële Buffet was born.

Co-written by her great-granddaughters Anne and Claire Berest, GABRIËLE (April 2025) brings to light the long-overlooked story of a brilliant woman and creative.

Gabriële Buffet was Francis Picabia’s first wife, a good friend of Guillaume Apollinaire, and the love object of Marcel Duchamp. She attended the first Armory Show in New York, where she popularized the work of Orphist, Dadaist, and Cubist artists. On what would have been her 143rd birthday, we are thrilled to celebrate this key figure to both the artistic revolution and the French resistance. 🇫🇷

Until books hit shelves in April, you can find out more about GABRIËLE at gabrielenovel.net or at https://www.europaeditions.com/book/9798889660897/gabriele.

P.S. Does the name Gabriële Buffet-Picabia ring a bell? 🛎️ You might remember her as Vicente’s mother in Anne Berest’s THE POSTCARD. 📪

Anne Berest is back! Starting this weekend, Anne will be touring across Ohio and New York.

Anne’s English language debut THE POSTCARD took bookstores by a storm in 2023, and was named a TIME Best Book of the Year and runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Anne’s new book GABRIELE, co-written with her sister Claire, will be out in the U.S. in April 2025. It is based on the life of Gabriële Buffet — the Berest sisters’ great-grandmother — whose extraordinary impact on 20th-century avant-garde art has largely been obscured.

No need for a plane ticket — this fall, you can travel to Naples with a bookmark as your only carry-on item. ✈️

If the buzz around "My Brilliant Friend" has you itching to discover the town made famous by Elena Ferrante, look no further than the latest installment of The Passenger. "Go up" to Vomero, a middle class, homogeneous, peaceful neighborhood, then immerse yourself in the over-the-top life of the historic centre, crossed as it is by a thousand stratifications — architectural, historical and social. And yet even there we find an alternative reading: the city as a model of coexistence between ancient and modern.

“A wonderful publication and a beautiful object. 'The Passenger' is a pleasure to read, to hold, and to look at.” —La Repubblica

Join Nicola Lagioia on tour!

This September, join the winning author on his tour for THE CITY OF THE LIVING, a spellbinding, best-selling work of true crime about one of the most shocking murders in recent Italian history.⁣

Now in paperback, THE CITY OF THE LIVING follows the story of two seemingly “ordinary” men, Manuel Foffo and Marco Prato, who in March 2016, with no apparent motive, brutally murdered twenty-three-year-old Luca Varani in a nondescript apartment on the outskirts of Rome.⁣

Razor-sharp, unputdownable, devastating, THE CITY OF THE LIVING is an immersive, unsettling portrait of Rome and its inhabitants as well as a profound examination of human nature itself, written by an author working at the height of his powers.⁣

The Passenger: South Korea is OUT NOW! 🇰🇷

From kimchi to K-pop, from webtoons to cosmetics, in recent years Korea has captured the global imagination, one viral trend at a time. But if the global youth looks to Korea as previous generations looked to Hollywood and New York, young Koreans instead talk about a country that is rapidly aging, an economic system dominated by powerful chaebols, a fiercely competitive educational system, a generational gap in outlook and, at the center of it all, the role of women.

This fall, The Passenger sets out to discover a complex, fascinating country, central to the dynamics of today’s world, and one that is often exoticized and idealized to the same extent.

A Rebel in Gaza and Displaced are OUT NOW! 📚

These two new nonfiction titles are human portraits of two of the biggest stories of our time.

A Rebel in Gaza is Asmaa Alghoul's moving memoir of growing up in Gaza with a hunger for freedom and a passionate attachment to the places she calls home.

In Displaced, Russian dissident and journalist Valery Panyushkin gives readers an immersive and humanizing account of what it means to wake up one day and find yourself a refugee.

Pub day for The Axeman's Carnival is finally here!!! 🐦‍ 📖

From the critically acclaimed author of Pet comes a tale as charming as it is shocking, where the animal and human worlds, hope and dread, comedy and tragedy, all bleed into one other.

★ “The magpie narrator offers more nuance and understanding to human relations than do most people. Chidgey is a skilled storyteller and doesn’t stop surprising with this gorgeously haunting work. Endlessly faceted and highly recommended for book clubs.”—Library Journal (starred review)

The Axeman's Carnival is almost here! 🐦‍⬛

From the best-selling author of Pet comes a dazzling portrayal of humanity and the natural world that perfectly balances violence and humor.

Tama is just a helpless chick when he is rescued by Marnie, and with Tama come new possibilities for Marnie and her husband's future. Tama can speak, and his fame is growing. Outside, in the pines, his father warns him of the wickedness wrought by humans. Indoors, Marnie confides in him about her violent marriage. The more Tama sees, the more the animal and the human worlds—and all the precarity, darkness and hope within them—bleed into one another.

Part trickster, part surrogate child, part witness, Tama the magpie is the star of this story. Though what he says aloud to humans is often nonsensical (and hilarious), the tale he tells us weaves a disturbingly human sense. The Axeman’s Carnival is Catherine Chidgey at her finest—comic, profound, poetic and true.

“The Axeman’s Carnival… is thrilling, beautifully rendered
and pitch perfect.”—The Newsroom (NZ)

MY BRILLIANT FRIEND by Elena Ferrante, translated by Ann Goldstein, has been named the Best Book of the 21st Century by The New York Times

“The book…expands as propulsively as the early universe, encompassing ideas about art and politics, class and gender, philosophy and fate, all through a dedicated focus on the conflicted, competitive friendship between Elena and Lila…Reading this uncompromising, unforgettable novel is like riding a bike on gravel: It’s gritty and slippery and nerve-racking, all at the same time.“—The New York Times⁣

THE THRONE is out now! 👑⁣

Written by Franco Bernini and translated from the Italian by Stransky, this meticulously researched and brilliantly told historical novel, the first in a trilogy, recounts the enigmatic life of Niccolò Machiavelli, revealing the complex man behind the infamous political strategist.⁣

Set against the backdrop of the Renaissance, THE THRONE is a captivating reflection on ambition, morality, and the pursuit of power and influence—as elucidating as Robert Caro’s THE POWER BROKER, as gripping and stylish as Hilary Mantel’s WOLF HALL, and as atmospheric as Maggie O’Farrell’s THE MARRIAGE PORTRAIT.⁣
