The board and staff at American Songbook Association and Cabaret Scenes Magazine work long and hard to create events featuring an award that REALLY sync with the unique personality of our honoree.

The 2024 Darrell Henline Award evening, celebrating performer, director, producer and master teacher Lina Koutrakos, was as unique, warm, loving and brilliant as she is. Further, the overwhelming vibe emanating from the audience, the talent- even the staff at the Green Room 42- was one of love, fellowship and an abundance of respect.

The ASA and Cabaret Scenes Magazine are so grateful to Lina, everyone who supported her in the room or on the livestream and the generous people who took out ads for the program and the magazine. All of you made the evening expand far beyond typical standards of “success” and travel into a realm of “once in a lifetime.”

As Lina so aptly articulated, “I’ve come to that part of my lifetime where I reevaluate ‘fortune,’ take a long look at what I have, and, like George Bailey, I realize I am very, very rich.”

Yes, Lina, you are. And we ALL left that room with a fortune in our memory banks and hearts. So congratulations to everyone involved. We got it right.

Another wonderful educational program delivered by the reconfigured ASA education committee, comprised of Anna Anderson, Yasuhiko (Yaz) Fucoaka, Michael Kirk Lane , board president Craig Pomranz and (not pictured here) Joanne Halev, Deborah Stone, Ann Talman and Eric Yves Garcia. The Director is Carolyn Montgomery

Today we visited Kipp’s Infiniti Elementary in West Harlem after FIRST arriving at Kipps Middle School in the Bronx. My early rising crew (program was at 9:30) were all smiles as we navigated to the correct address, hauled the equipment upstairs to the gym, and delivered a flawless program of jazz, musical theatre and classic American songs to a large group of K-4th graders. Kipps is one of the schools with whom we’d like to partner in terms of more extensive programming from the ASA. Their principle, Sundiata AddisonWatch this space. Exciting things are happening at the ASA and Cabaret Scenes!

Cabaret Scenes magazine and the American Songbook Association is sad to report that our publisher, Peter Leavy, passed away last night surrounded by his loved ones. Peter has been involved with the magazine since its beginning, contributing reviews and articles. In 2007, he become publisher and expanded its pages and turned it from black and white to full color. His generosity kept the magazine alive, and we would not exit today with out his support. He was a cheerleader for all things cabaret, from the performers to the directors, music directors, and technical directors. Thank you, Peter! You will be missed.

There will be a full photo and video account of American Songbook Association’s Spring Concert at The Henry Viscardi School, with 80 students from Kindergarten-6th Grade, singing songs they selected from popular musicals- rehearsed for 6 months!

For now these photos speak to the overwhelming happiness that poured from the students in song, and the reciprocal happiness of the 100+ people in the audience who came to hear them.

Huge thanks to the teaching team of Eric Yves Garcia, Ann Talman and Carolyn Montgomery, as well as volunteers Eli Forant, Richard Hillman (photo credits) and Board Chair Craig Pomranz.

As the day closes on International Women’s Day 2024, our org invests its hope in the future; in the empowerment of our girls and young women to contribute their creativity to a plan for a more beautiful world. This photo was taken after an ASA music program at an elementary school in Chicago. This little girl was asking Executive Director Carolyn Montgomery if she thought that “musicals would still be happening when I’m a grownup?” Montgomery’s answer: “They will still be happening BECAUSE of young women like you, who want to sing and act and dance. So do it! Keep doing it! And don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t. Find other people like you and make as much music and art as you can.”

Our young women and girls, our budding artists, need help to grow and thrive and get their shot at changing the world. Won’t you help us make it happen?

“My goal is to create access to music education for every student, regardless of their resources, background or any other factor, in every state of the union. A lofty goal? Perhaps. A vitally important one? Absolutely. And the American Songbook Association is committed to helping students dream bigger dreams, perform better on standardized tests, study more effectively- all scientifically proven results of exposure to music. EVERY child needs access to a music education. We have to start somewhere. Will you help me?”
