Power Station Studios were built in 1977, employing a revolutionary design which emphasizes sight-lines between musicians and the natural sound of acoustic instruments and voices. Nile Rodgers produced the first session, and the studios continue to be home to the world’s most creative recording artists. Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, Christian Ma

rclay, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Dire Straits, John Mayer and Esperanza Spalding have all made amazing recordings here, and the facility remains a center of the New York City music industry. Originally a Con Edison power relay station, the building spent time as the television studio where “Let’s Make A Deal” with Monty Hall was produced. Power Station became Avatar Studios in 1996, and in September of 2017, the name “Power Station” returned, by special arrangement with BerkleeNYC. Berklee is dedicated to preserving and building on the Power Station legacy by reinvigorating the studios and transforming them into the world’s premier large-format recording destination.

Saorse Ronan and Nicholas Britell recently performed the original song ‘Winter Coat’ from ‘Blitz’, the latest film from Steve McQueen, in Studio A. This lovely featurette was recorded live in Studio A by with assistance from .

‘Blitz’ is a beautiful and heart wrenching World War II film that can be streamed on Apple TV. The song itself if performed by Ronan in the film, as a young mother longing for her lost son who has been chosen to perform for a live BBC Wartime Radio Broadcast.

Today commemorates the 44th anniversary of the release of ‘The River’ by Bruce Springsteen. The River sessions will forever be a staple in our studio’s legacy.⁠

The recording for this celebrated album took place over a span of 16 months starting in 1979 in Studio A, with engineering by Bob Clearmountain and Neil Dorfsman, among others, and production by Jon Landau. ⁠
⁠
The way these tracks were recorded influenced what became the classic Power Station sound. With 24 Pultec EQ’s in each control room, every single track would go through our Pultecs before hitting tape, even if they didn’t want to EQ them. Some tracks would simply go through the Pultec tubes, thanks to a mod created by the chief technician, Ed Evans, that allowed tracks to go through the tubes without using the EQ stage. The drums were recorded in our large live room of Studio A with room microphones to pick a lot of ambience, which is a staple used consistently in our studio. In addition to the natural room sound, they added our EMT 140 plates, which are also still used to this day as our go to reverb. There were plenty of other fun techniques used during the session, but we can’t tell you all the secrets!⁠

The record was performed by Bruce and the E Street Band including Steven Van Zandt (guitar), Garry Tallent (bass), Max Weinberg (drums), Roy Bittan (piano), Clarence Clemons (saxophone), and Danny Federici (organ).⁠

We had the pleasure of hosting the first recording session for the score by , and it is out now! ⁠

This was an extremely special session, with everything recorded straight to tape in Studio C. The room was filled with extremely talented musicians that featured 5 horns, drums, loads of percussion, bass, guitar, and, of course, Jon on keys. Seeing Jon Batiste’s genius come to life through improvisation, within the limit of 30 minutes per reel, was surreal. Jon would often tell the musicians that they were just warming up and practicing, but would secretly have us recording the whole thing- that’s how he was able to spark some magic and bring more liveness to the music.
