"There is a special nature in photography – it can have a dark, absorbing element to it – something between life and the afterlife," describes artist , whose new book, Mapping Subconsciousness, launches Wednesday, October 16, 2024. "It's like a time capsule that grants you the magical tool to go back and forth in time and make the now look like a timeless place in the void."

Marcus Schaefer is a Paris based multi-disciplinary artist who works in the field of photography, painting and sculpture. His driving force is pressuring impulse to capture his current state of mind. In a world predominantly ruled by color images, Schaefer seeks avenues of escape and expression through the visual aesthetics of black and white.

On view now through June 1 at Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles is the debut solo exhibition of artist Magdalena Wosinska, held in conjunction with the release of her newest monograph, Fulfill the Dream. This exhibition will include a selection of photographs from Fulfill the Dream, in addition to Wosinska’s photojournalism imagery which captures the intimacy of human connection that balances adventure and introspection.

"Central to Wosinska’s photography is the celebration of spontaneity," the Fahey/Klein team describes. "Viewers find themselves immediately immersed in Wosinska’s world, where authenticity reigns supreme and every moment is overflowing with a hint of rebelliousness. Through intimate portraits she explores the complexities of selfhood, highlighting the interplay between inner emotions and outward appearances. Her subjects are portrayed genuinely, without artifice or pretense, inviting viewers to reflect on their own sense of identity. Whether it’s skateboarding down city streets or basking in the golden hues of nature, each frame exudes a sense of liberation and outlaw attitude. The sensual and sun-drenched photographs of women roaming n**e in nature are quintessentially Magdalena, as are her portraits of the South-Central Cowboys and vignettes of motorcycles in the desert."

Artist Ellen von Unwerth opens her fifth solo exhibition at Staley-Wise Gallery this week in New York City, aptly titled "The Provocateur".

The photographs included in this exhibition, several of which have never been seen before, reflect a liberated and irrepressible engagement with her subjects that the photographer has championed for her entire career. Von Unwerth notes “I know what it’s like when you feel really uncomfortable, so I do everything in my power to make them feel at ease – and to live and laugh and move.” These exhibition images reflect a winking provocateur; not so much the object of lust but the playful instigator - both innocent and naughty. While eroticism is in the forefront of many of these images, fantasy and humor unite von Unwerth’s vision of her subjects simply having fun - with each other, and with the viewer who they tease, taunt, and provoke.

The exhibition is on view March 8 through May 11, 2024. Learn more at https://www.staleywise.com/exhibitions/ellen-von-unwerth6

Tomorrow (Thursday, June 2) at Rizzoli Books, Matthew Brookes celebrates the release of his new monograph, “Into The Wild”.

For this project, Brookes followed a group of young surfers from Venice Beach on their adventures up and down the coast. The result is a story of van culture along the California coast—a story of youth choosing to follow their dreams, living out of vans, existing for surf and travel and freedom, and always chasing the best waves.
