Weight training was part of the inspiration behind, VISIONAIRE 68 NOW contributor, Tiona Nekkia McCloddenā€™s powerful new exhibition, MASK/ CONCEAL / CARRY . Specifically itā€™s the concept of ā€œtraining to failā€, lifting to the point where your muscles break. Only then can your body learn to rebuild itself as muscle in order not to fail you again. This theme weaves a nice psychological thread when taking in this new body of work.
Upon entering the exhibit the theme of guns isnā€™t in your face. The dark blue lighting has you calm and curious and unable to make much out as you adjust. As you approach the works you unmask them and start to realize what they are. Sculptural relief forms of AR15 rifle parts and pistols that are as disconcerting as they are sexy. Ballistic bullet trace paintings that capture points of data about the shooter that are as unsettling as they are interestingly elegant. A chain-mail facial covering that is as haunting as it is beautiful. You see where we are going. Here in lies the CARRY component of the showā€¦ it stays with you.

ā€œOne of our favorite Visionaire projects we worked with a Theologian to ā€œeditā€ the Bible text - not the first time someone has done that (!) - and submitted that text to the various artists we asked - here Cain and Abel by Karl Lagerfeld, who was always generously up for a creative ask/assignment from us. The church actually came after us with this project! šŸ™€šŸ™šŸ½
