Known internationally for his dynamic choreography of Broadway’s THE LION KING, Garth Fagan is widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative changemakers and original artists in the performing arts industry. Last week, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture welcomed the Tony, Olivier, and Helpmann Award-winning choreographer and founder of Garth Fagan Dance, along with incredible performers, activists, and creatives from The Lion King and the Garth Fagan Dance community to the Oprah Winfrey Theatre for a special program honoring Fagan’s legacy.
His work on our show made him the longest-running Black Choreographer in Broadway history. Fagan finds joy in creating, and he once said creating a new dance piece is, “reaching for a unique, deep, rich, shattering something. For me, that comes from a place of solitude.”
Today and every day, we are honored to be a part of Garth’s legacy and to continue sharing his iconic movements with our audiences around the world. #CelebrateBlackStories
As we continue to #CelebrateBlackStories, our Young Nala Ava Hailey shared with us how ballerina Misty Copeland inspired her as a performer and reminisced on the time they connected during an online discussion. 💛❤️💚
“In her response, she reminded me to ‘come as you are, and not let anybody else tell you that you can’t do something just because of the way you look or where you come from. When you present yourself, as a Black person, or in this case, a Black woman in this community, there are going to be challenges that you face. But no matter what, you stand strong, you stay true to who you are and you push through all the noes. You do what your heart says.’”
