BOSTON — Alysa Liu let out a shocked smile Friday night, as the crowd at TD Garden roared and the stuffed animals began to rain down on the ice.

Three years after retiring, and one year after unretiring, she was, improbably, a world champion.

Liu became the first American woman in nearly two decades to win a world figure skating title Friday, clinching history with a brilliant, poised performance to the music of Boston-born disco artist Donna Summer. After winning the short program portion of the women’s singles competition earlier this week, she won the free skate, too − sealing her place atop the podium with the final performance of the night.

A federal judge on Tuesday blocked Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from firing any more USAID employees or terminating USAID contracts, writing that efforts to speedily shut down the aid organization were likely unconstitutional.

The Trump administration’s shutdown efforts “likely violated the United States Constitution in multiple ways,” wrote Judge Theodore D. Chuang.

Chuang wrote that the accelerated process “deprived the public’s elected representatives in Congress of their constitutional authority to decide whether, when, and how to close down an agency created by Congress.”

Five years after COVID-19 was declared an official pandemic, the U.S. government has suspended its free at-home COVID test distribution program.

The Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, shut down ordering via covidtests.gov Sunday, posting a notice that says, “The free at-home COVID-19 test distribution program is not currently accepting orders.”

Orders placed before 8 p.m. ET Sunday, March 9, 2025, will still be shipped, said the notice. The USPS website for ordering likewise said that “ordering through this program has been suspended effective March 9, 2025.”

Before that time, American households were able to place orders through the website for free at-home COVID tests, which were then shipped for no cost through the U.S. Postal Service. Ordering via the website has been closed and re-opened periodically since it was launched in late 2021, usually with renewed eligibilities.

WASHINGTON − Billionaire Elon Musk, who has been cutting thousands of federal workers as the head of Department of Government Efficiency, on Thursday reposted a message on X saying “Hi**er didn’t murder millions of people. Public sector employees did.”

WASHINGTON – War-torn Ukraine, reeling from an Oval Office meltdown between President Donald Trump and leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, will get a do-over Tuesday when its negotiators meet with administration officials in Saudi Arabia.

After a dramatic Feb. 28 White House blowup derailed a minerals deal, roiled relations between the two countries and led to a U.S. cutoff of weapons and intelligence, Washington and Kyiv are hopeful they can repair relations and make progress on a truce with Russia.
