I was 20-something in NYC, script supervising a Food Network show with Ted Allen (from Chopped!) when showrunner Vivian Sorenson pulled me aside.

“Don’t give the crew more than one instruction at a time.”

It stayed with me & I’ve applied it across every industry I’ve worked in since.

Welcome to Lessons I Learned from a CEO: Week 8.

Has this principle shown up in your work? How? 👇👇🏾

“The president of the college addressed the student body and said, just like it’s wrong to curse and drink and smoke, it’s wrong to refer to your Black brothers and sisters in these terms. That was my first foray into activism.” — Colin D. Smith

A racial slur. A Bible study. A line of students who said nothing — and a group who refused to let it stand.

“If you grew up in the church, that imagery immediately resonates as a human being trying to elevate themselves to the status of God.”
— Legislator Colin D. Smith, Westchester County, District 1

Colin grew up inside the evangelical church at First Baptist of Peekskill. When he saw Franklin Graham defend AI imagery of Donald Trump cast in Christ-like light, it prompted him to write Whitewashed Christianity.

He used a word that stayed with us: betrayal.

But betrayal implies a covenant. Something broken.

So: who betrayed whom?

🎬Season two of Evolution Now is officially in the can.

🫡Thank you for closing out the season with me. Jimmy Nolan represents District 15 in Westchester County: Bronxville, Eastchester, and Yonkers. He is also the first Republican elected official I’ve had on the show.

👉🏾👉 up: two more regular episodes featuring Westchester County legislators Colin Smith and Jimmy Nolan, respectively. Two legislators with two very different points of view, both representing our county.

🇺🇸💥Then we end with a bang: a 250th Anniversary Special the week leading up to July 4th, bringing together a range of voices on where we are as a country, across politics, policy, religion, race, culture, music, art, technology, and yes, AI. You won’t want to miss it.

🔔Thanks to everyone following the fun. If you’re not yet, please subscribe & share with your friends and family. It would mean the world!

Class of 2026, this one’s for you. 🎓

Not sure what your next move is? Neither was Daniel Lakind.

The summer between junior and senior year, one gig out in LA changed everything—and set off the chain that made him the filmmaker and TV producer he is today.

In this clip from Evolution Now, Daniel walks us through his evolution: the early break, the grind, and 13 Emmy losses before he finally took home two.

Double congrats this week—to the graduates of 2026, and to Story of My Number, just renewed for Season 3 (and last season’s two-time Emmy winner).

Wondering if it’s too late to make this summer count? It isn’t. One yes can rewrite the whole story.

👀 The late, great Jack Welch said: be brutally prepared, radically candid, understand the other side’s interests, and create an outcome where the relationship survives.

👋👋🏾 Welcome to Week 7 of Lessons I Learned From a CEO.

🎬 Today I’m talking about the negotiation every storyteller misses — the one you’re making with your audience the moment they press play.

You’re asking for their time, their attention, their emotional investment. That’s a contract. And if you want them to come back, you’d better deliver a return.

In this video, I break down the Balcony and Dance Floor Method — how the best storytellers move an audience from wow to I felt that — and how you can do it in 60 seconds or a feature film.

Watch & tell me what you think.

Lessons I Learned from a CEO Week 6: The One Thing That Kills a Pitch

The number 1 thing that kills a pitch isn’t a bad idea. It’s something almost everyone does without realizing it.

From print to policy. I sat down with legislator Judah Holstein, who’s writing the rules to stop deepfakes. Look out for this special episode on Evolution Now, dropping in a few weeks.

“I won’t tell you about my dream I had when I was taking the class.” 🎸

Melissa Panszi is a jewelry designer, community builder and the Fairy Godmother of the Rivertowns.

She also took a Beatles class in college.

It is the one class she remembers most from all her years in school.

Each album.
Each era.
Each transition from England to America to the 70s.
She loved all of it.

And then one night — John Lennon showed up in her dream.
“My whole dream was in negative form. Like a film negative. And I remember waking up thinking — I am really taking this class way too seriously.”

Flora’s verdict: he visited you. We can say that.

“There’s a person behind every product. There’s a story behind everyone who made something.” 🎨

Melissa Panszi walked into a vacant retail space at the New Rochelle train station right after COVID.

Pitched the city.
They said yes.
The rest is Rivertowns’ history.

‘Make Your Mark[et]’ started as a one stop holiday shop.

Then, it became something nobody expected:
🤝🏽 an incubator for local makers
🤝 an advocate for underrepresented artists
🤝🏽 an inclusive space in the community

“Someone came in and said — it feels so inclusive here. And I’m like, that’s what I wanted to feel.”

Swipe to see how she built it. 👉🏽👉🏾
