The French Publishers' Agency

The French Publishers' Agency FPA is a literary agency dedicated to bringing the best of French writing to the North America.

The French Publishers’ Agency represents the English language rights to a highly selective yet widely diverse list of books from France, ranging from literary fiction and thrillers to sociology and philosophy, and occasionally children’s books and graphic novels. As an affiliate of the Bureau International de l’Édition Française (BIEF), it represents an average of sixty different member publishers

each year. Located in New York City, it is an important resource for publishers on either side of the Atlantic, opening doors for contemporary French novelists and provocative thinkers in the English language. The agency is proud to include among its authors many preeminent French thinkers, such as Pierre Bourdieu, Gilles Deleuze, Emmanuel Lévinas, André Compte-Sponville, Marguerite Duras, Jean Baudrillard, Julia Kristeva, and Michel Onfray. But the agency’s most recognizable titles are found in the fiction section, including Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky and Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery, and many more from authors like Anna Gavalda, Amélie Nothomb, Assia Djebar, Laurent Gaudé, Alain Mabanckou, Dany Laferrière, Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, and Emmanuel Carrère. Many of the agency’s novelists have now become classics, including Georges Perec, J.M.G. Le Clézio, Patrick Chamoiseau, Patrick Modiano, Raymond Queneau, and Boris Vian.

Landlords, officials, and neighbors—some willing, others complicit—became part of a system that reallocated these apartments under Vichy and N**i rule.

"𝙲𝚘𝚙𝚢𝚛𝚒𝚐𝚑𝚝 𝚙𝚛𝚘𝚝𝚎𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝚠𝚊𝚜 𝚗𝚘𝚝 𝚗𝚊𝚖𝚎𝚍 𝚊𝚜 𝚊 𝚙𝚛𝚒𝚘𝚛𝚒𝚝𝚢"

The AI Action Summit in Paris was a key moment in defining the future of artificial intelligence. However, as we reflect on the priorities laid out, one striking omission stands out: copyright protection was not named as a priority.

While the summit focused on AI accessibility, ethics, and innovation, it left a fundamental question unresolved—how can we ensure that AI respects and upholds intellectual property and supports creative industries? In a time when publishers are already dealing with AI models trained on copyrighted works, this silence is deeply concerning.

How can we shape AI’s future without addressing the protection of intellectual property? Creative industries—publishing, journalism, the arts—are the very foundation of the data AI relies on. And yet, copyright was relegated to an afterthought, merely a topic for “global reflection.” To me, this isn’t enough.

What we need now is clear action. The future of AI must not come at the expense of authors, journalists, and publishers whose works power these technological innovations.

This is why the International Publishers Association - IPA statement before the summit was so crucial. The joint statement, signed by 38 international organizations across the creative and cultural sectors, emphasizes a critical point: AI's development must go hand in hand with the protection of copyright and related rights. This is a global issue that transcends borders. There can be no trusted AI without respecting intellectual property, and as the IPA highlights, no ethical AI without the authorization of rightsholders or fair compensation for creators.

Where do we go from here? How do we ensure AI upholds the value of original content? AI’s growth and copyright protection are not opposing forces—they must progress together.

Many professions depend on it.

The just-concluded Artificial Intelligence Action Summit hosted by French president Emmanuel Macron did not include copyright protection as one of its six top priorities, but did mention that protection of IP is worthy of “global reflection.”

A powerful debut novel from Guinean author Amadou Barry, 𝘿𝙞𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙣 𝙀𝙭𝙞𝙡𝙚 offers a raw, poignant glimpse into the lives of those who are made invisible under the label “migrant.” Through Dramé’s journey—torn from his homeland and thrust into the harsh realities of exile—Barry delivers a caustic and deeply human tale of friendship, loss, and resilience.

Dramé’s bond with Fodié, an erudite philosopher from Ivory Coast, brings moments of solace amid the violence and destitution of a Parisian tunnel encampment.

But when Fodié disappears, Dramé’s story evolves into an ode to their shared struggles. Barry masterfully restores dignity to restore dignity to those undocumented immigrants, challenging readers to confront uncomfortable truths.

The conversation around hashtag and its use of hashtag content is no longer confined to boardrooms—it’s now a global issue. Governments, like the UK, are stepping in with new proposals, such as an "hashtag -out" system for AI training, sparking debates about innovation, intellectual property, and the future of creative industries.

The UK government has initiated a public consultation on artificial intelligence (AI) and copyright, proposing an "opt-out" system that would allow AI developers to use copyrighted materials for training unless rights holders explicitly object. This approach has raised concerns within the creative industries, including the publishing sector, about potential unauthorized use of protected content.

Dan Conway, CEO of the Publishers Association, emphasizes the importance of establishing a hashtag framework that supports AI innovation while safeguarding the rights and incentives of content creators.

The consultation period is open until February 25, 2025, providing an opportunity for stakeholders to influence the development of policies that balance technological advancement with the protection of intellectual property.

'We do want to raise some concerns immediately,' writes the Publishers Association's Dan Conway on the new AI consultation…
